Do different regions play instruments in certain ways?

I don't know if I'm being a faggot or if I just listen to such a small selection of music, but i feel like I can tell Japanese guitar-playing apart from others. I'm not as deeply into music as most of you though so I'm assuming I'm sucking dicks.

Every few years I come here to ask if there are any western bands that has similar guitars to this song/band. I think i'll just give up and just listen to similar sounding jap bands. Tricot and Mass of Fermenting Dregs have some great guitar playing that I feel is similar to Nico.

Anyways, I just want some nice guitar-heavy tunes similar to that stuff.

does this sound japanese to you?

you can bump your own thread but you have to wait a bit after your initial post

To me, Japanese guitarists' playing does tend to sound rather loose and maybe less melodic than their Western counterparts. No idea why.

neat. thank you -- i should have looked at the timestamps and that would have given it away.

Nah. I probably would have thought it was some American post rock band if i had to take an honest guess at the instrumentals. I dig it though.
>>75041837
This one I would have guessed as Jap though.

>>75041823
Thanks! had no idea of what terms to use to describe the way it sounds.

There are different cultural musical scales if that's what you mean.

I'm not sure exactly what I mean. Would you mind explaining further? Like I said, I'm very entry level with music. maybe even less.

It's not a regional thing; it's a genre thing, and Japan just happens to have its own unique sub-genre of postrock

Even within western sub-genres, comparing say black metal with blues rock, you'll see these kinds of differences.

As for why this occurs, there are tons of very microscopic choices made in music, like the brand of guitar, the amp settings, the timing of notes in relation to the beat (e.g. hitting notes right on beats vs a few milliseconds either side of it), what scales to use, what progressions to favour within those scales, where to place guitar solos and how long they should be etc etc. And because musicians tend to learn music through imitation rather than a conscious memorisation of every one of these aspects, they end up unconsciously assimilating the choices of the artists whom they're copying into their own playstyle. When many people imitate the same general body of songs, they all end up with very similar musical habits, resulting in a genre.

The guitar doesn't have the same history in Japan than it does in America or Europe. Whilst here bands were just stealing the previous artists and adding new ideas to it (blues to R&B to rock etc) while in Japan it was pretty much a clean slate for rock music. Weird to thing that our base influences for rock music traces to the blues, but in Japan, The Doors or similar 60's bands are like the starting point. It leads to a totally different view point and method of working
