The Japanese, due to their autistic history of stringed instruments and folk music, tend to write, in western scales, harmony that is less cliche.
Most songs are written with a few jazzy chords with a fucking subdominant harmonic minor 3rd carry the 7 chord instead of your usual Em.

That's the main thing behind most great bands, harmony that isn't really basic. The Beatles come to mind, even their most basic harmonies have some really interesting moments. Another kinda interesting example is The Who, especially since Pete Townshed basically played a hybrid between rhythm and lead guitar.
