I don't think it could happen in today's context. Back then, there was a much more rigid division between genres. Nu-metal was an attempt to join rap with metal at the time. I'm not a fan, but it was "shocking" to the larger population to see collaborations with popular rap artists and rock guys...or rapping over metal in general. Now it's WWE entrance music or a conscious B-Side with Lil' Yachty and Brad Paisley. Nobody cares.

Itself, it wasn't enough of a sub-genre that it would warrant a resurgence. Sure it was huge--but hugely generic. Kind of like 80's pop metal. Poison, Bullet Boys, Warrant, so on. The later stuff. You'll be more likely to see a Priest, Crue, or Ratt resurgence than the later years...Nu-metal is the same story.
