>Rock's greatest geniuses never liked The Beatles

Really takes the ol' brain muscle for a jog
>>
I guess you're right

The Beatles did not exactly liked to hear their own songs
>>
That's only because none of these people liked anything
>>
60s musicians who were more avant-garde than the beatles didnt really care for the pop sensations massively outselling them
>>
>>74983046
>th e
fact.

THAt
>>
>>74983046
Zappa's favorite Beatles song was Paperback Writer. He's also covered I am The Walrus.
>>
>>74983046
>biggest tryhards in music didn't like an incredibly popular band
wow color me surprised
>>
>>74983046
But only two of those are actual geniuses
(hint: they're both on the left)
>>
>>74983205
Exactly
>>
>>74983046
>Keef who said Zeppelin were shit
Why didn't this cunt die in the 70s?

>Le edgy and witty Zappa
Literal nobody who inspired goofballs like Satriani and Vai

>Captain Beefheart
Hipster garbage people give 5 stars to on RYM to seem cultured

>Lou Reed
One hit wonder solo career
>>
>>74983309
yikes
>>
Lou Reed is the only "genius" from this and it lies mostly with John Cale.
>>
Zappa just thought The Beatles were "okay"
>>
>>74983356
Sorry. I try to stay calm but I do get triggered by pretentious /mu/core garbage and sometimes I have to go on a cheeky rant
>>
>>74983363
He's actually the only up there that's bad.
>>
>>74983258
>Better stick to blues rock for the rest of your life
>You don't want to be labelled a tryhard, do you?
>>
>>74983309
This better be ironic.
>>
>>74983408
I really have to stretch to put myself in a position where Frank fucking Zappa is a musical genius, or Beefheart who made entry level blues (his most popular songs stolen directly from Howlin Wolf) and one experimental album resulted from him finnicking around with a piano, and then having it transposed into some much bigger than the actual mediocre songwriting. Not even gonna start about Keith Richards, I might as well go after Paul McCartney.
>>
>>74983511
Not at all
>>
>>74983522
there's more than one experimental beefheart album bro
>>74983309

That's what you think.

On a more serious note - he tried to be a classical composer and a jazz musician, but failed at both is what I'm expecting his answer would be.

What about Walk on the Wild Side?
>>
>>74983695
ugh thanks for reminding me how much I hate lou reed
>>

>Aesthetic failure
>Trite melodies played on a wall
>Incapable of sincerity
>Emotionless vocals
>Lyrical wank

Hopefully those adjectives can paint the picture of what I think of Zappa's music.
>>
I'd be more convinced if those artists made good music themselves
>>
>>74983725
>Incapable of sincerity
Well, something had to confirm that you weren't actually serious. And I guess I was half right:
>>74983712
>>
>>74983309
>Keef who said Zeppelin were shit
a smart man
>inspired goofballs like Satriani and Vai
admirable
>>
>Keith who said Sgt Peppers was shit, Sabbath were shit and Zeppelin were shit

What a bitter old cunt
>>
>>74983725
Vocals have to be emotional?
>>
>>74983786
Incapable of sincerity is what you said. He tries to be an every genre musician instead of playing what he actually enjoys playing. Pure posturing.
>>
>>74983840
Don't take him too seriously, he said something similar about every possible band he had to give his opinion on. Don't take him too seriously also applies to:
>>74983843
>>
>>74983725
I consider Frank Zappa my favorite musician of all time, bar none
But to be fair, most of these are reasonable criticisms
Zappa is somebody I would never try to "convince" someone to like, because his work is very specific and idiosyncratic
Honestly, his music does often lack emotion beyond humor, and if you aren't a fan of endless guitar solos and rapid arpeggiated melodies, you probably just ain't going to like him
>>
>>74983856
>Incapable of sincerity is what you said
Quote me on that? These are my posts:
>>74983683
>>74983712
>He tries to be an every genre musician instead of playing what he actually enjoys playing
Have you exhumed his body and asked him yourself which genre he really wanted to play? You're being ridiculous.
>>
>>74983309
>Keef who said Zeppelin were shit
Accurate.
>>
>>74983871
>his music does often lack emotion beyond humor
Someone has to listen to the Yellow Shark immediately.
>>
>>74983871
>most of these are reasonable criticisms
I don't think so. Aside from Zappa not being a particularly emotional singer I don't see it. Especially the "trite melodies" bit.
>>
>>74983995
Given how he hasn't responded to anyone since he made that post, he's just here to aggravate people. Stop replying or better yet, leave this thread altogether.
>>
>>74984014
He, meaning:
>>74983725
>>
>>74983258
>kek. You like musicians who put effort into what they make without resorting to banal formulaic shit?
>>
>>74983962
I've listened to pretty much all his albums - note that I said "often". While I agree that his music does contain emotion - I personally think there's at least a moment or two of tenderness and sincerity on every one of his albums - the average guy listening to Sheik Yerbouti or whatever is going to think all he does is joke around
>>
>>74984125
>the average guy listening to Sheik Yerbouti or whatever is going to think all he does is joke around
Just another confirmation of him being a musician's musician.
>>
All four of them would have joined the Beatles in a heartbeat. Don't be stupid.
>>
>>74984201
If they're were hacks.
>>
>>74983159
This
>>
>>74983046
Of course they didn't like them, they were everything they wanted to be, they were better musician, better payed and fucking famous.
>>
What makes Zappa truly shit is his condescending piece of shit attitude towards everyone. He couldn't help making enemies but it was somehow never his fault. He considered himself somehow 'better' than the rock scene for no discernible reason. He ruined his clear musical talent by being a piece of shit to everybody, unable to find a middle ground between taking himself far too seriously and not taking anything seriously enough. If the Beatles are Mozart, he's Salieri.
>>
>>74985315
None of the Beatles were objectively better than OP pics.
Besides Beefheart.
>>
>>74985410
The Beatles are objectively better than literally every other rock act ever
>>
>>74985410
Lou Reed is great, but he rode the coattails of more succesful people. Cale, Bowie, Iggy, he'd be nothing without them.
>>
>>74985410
Shit mate, get your head out of your ass, you know they were nowhere close to ANY of The Beatles as musicians.
>>
>>74985434
This unironically
>>
>>74983309
>said Zeppelin were shit
Yeah, anyone can play the Stairway to Heaven solo, but most can't play the three chords of a Ramones song if their lives depended on it because they didn't have the strength or ability to do it.

Zappa thought they were ok but overhyped
Lou Reed says he didn't like anyone and that the Velvet were better than any other band.
I know Beefheart criticized A Day in the Life, and satirized them once.
Keith Richards liked them but recently he called Sgt. Pepper garbage. Don't know what to make of that.
It's worth mentioning that Lou and Zappa both thought the others music was trash.

Only Beefheart didn't like them.

Frank Zappa

>When they went to America they made it wide open for us. We could never have gone there without them. They're so fucking good at what they did. This. OP is a tremendous faggot. The Beatles are universally loved. No act has ever received as many words of praise from other acts as they have. They're THE band
>>
>>74988785
To be honest, I made that comment, and I'm a big Beatles fan, but I hate the way they're worshiped.

As FZ once put it...

>People thought the Beatles were god! I think that was not correct. They were just a good commercial group.
>>
>>74988785
Classical trained composers think they're shit......
Bach wouldn't take shit from them.
>>
>>74988843
They're worshipped because they're the best. There's nothing wrong with it.
>>
>>74988867
They were, imo, exceptional melodic pop songwriters, and their story is fun, but there are a lot of other great musicians outside of that category.
>>
>>74983046
FUCK LOU REED THE OVERRATED CUNT & WHERE THE FUCK IS ALICE COOPER
>>
>>74988954
>but there are a lot of other great musicians outside of that category.
Naturally. The Beatles are still the best though and always will be.
>>

>>
>>74988985

>>
>>74989016
Nah but they're pretty great. Not one of my favorites but I appreciate that their discography might actually only be second to the Beatles in terms of acclaim. Also tremendous variety.
>>
>>74989005
They actually had a falling-out over the release of that performance.

That said, over the years Zappa praised Lucy In The Sky, I Am The Walrus and Strawberry Fields Forever.

Are you sure? Top section looks better to me.
Also consider that there are 21 years from the Bends to Moon Shaped Pool. There is 5 (FIVE) years from Help to Let it Be (actually recorded in 1969). It's not even close actually to compare them. Also worth noting that while the Beatles were at peak critical acclaim they were also the best selling act in the world. There will never again be an act that is considered the best and also be the best selling.
>>
>>74989206
>Band that stops touring are able to express bigger musical ideas

You don't say??
Even back in 97 OKC was voted over Revolver as greatest album of all time. Guess that claim hasn't really gone away.
But lets agree they're both really good and deserve evey acclaim they get.
>>
>>74989312

Well Zappa and Beefhart were both smelly and dirty hobos who didn't like the clean cut liverpool boys, Reed resented them actually being able to craft melodies and not half-assed slurred "talking" over standard progressions and Richards resented their stylistic flexibility in light of his one trick sagging face pony

Lou Reed was just an edgy fuck, and John Cale has said on multiple occasions how much he and the band admired The Beatles. Zappa didn't actually "dislike" their music, he just disliked the marketing sensation that they became. He even has said he really liked Revolver. Keith Richards is a retarded junkie who was constantly living in the shadow of The Beatles, his opinion is hardly worth discussing.

I don't know or care much much about Beefheart but I imagine this >>74983205 applies.
>>

He is actually the biggest Beatles fan out of these 4.

And yet Frank Zappa and Keith Richards saw fit to jam with John Lennon.

Not only that Frank Zappa parodied the cover of Sgt. Pepper for his third album, and even had Ringo Starr in the beginning of 200 Motels.

Really jogs the cerebrals, don't it?
>>
Beef>reed>Zappa>Richards

Lennon and McCartney become something else when they're combined so it's hard to judge. Their solo careers are definitely weaker than any of those 4 tho
