I can't grade this properly, all I know is that I can't even bear the thought of listening to '00s indie rock(-associated) stuff any more. Not even the stuff I thought was good at the time, not even the stuff I might still say is good. Maybe I'll check back in 10 years to see how it holds up. But right now it all feels useless. It'll get the kids going, sure, and there were times where I started tapping my foot and/or spacing-out pleasantly into the middle distance for a few seconds. (The squealing synth-guitar at the end of "Other Voices"; the slow-burn drone of "I Used To"; the proto-disco 'Al Green circa 1975' sound of "Change Yr Mind".) But 'spacing-out pleasantly into the middle distance for a few seconds' might be a reaction that's already bound for failure, y'know? Whenever I try to enjoy the indie stuff from the last 20 years these days, it feels like I'm simultaneously hearing the Smirnoff and Heineken tents blasting shitty EDM or trap music from Avooci or A$AP Dumba$$ while a rap airhorn sound announces Sugar Crisp cereal as LCD Soundsystem's new corporate sponsor. Ironically enough, this shit now feels like the soundtrack for exactly the kind of market psychology testing they appear to be mocking us for getting hipped to. So yeah, shove it up your ass. Sufjan, Jenny Lewis, the Mountain Goats, and the Go! Team, you guys can stay. Marnie Stern and No Age, too. And Joanna, if she counts. Courtney and Hop Along, we'll see. Everyone else can shove it. You sound like a snake eating itself, and if I enjoy any of that sound it's probably because I'm a toxic unworthy person, and the same goes for you.
