Why does /mu/ despise U2 so much and place them in the ranks of Nickelback and 21 Pilots.
They rose up in the late 70s alongside and directly influenced by a myriad of post-punk acts, worked with Eno and Martin Hannett, played shows with This Heat, got Einstürzende Neubauten to open for them at the height of their fame, and their guitarist once made a collaborative album with the members of Can and PiL featuring contributions from Arthur Russell.
Oh and they made great albums in the 80s and 90s and disseminated their influence pretty widely.
It's because le South Park made it cool to hate them. That's all there is to it. Oh, and the fact that their last album was legitimately terrible

hating /mu/ is a phase many music fans go through
like obsessing over culturally accepted /mu/cure like death grips or swans.
Ultimately U2 have some baller records, you just have to actually sit down and listen to their work to pick through and realise it.

They were a decent to good mainstream band until somewhere around the mid 90s when they jumped the shark.
It's been around 20 years since they've been worth a shit, guess how old the average /mu/ poster is.
They should have stopped after Zooropa, everything made afterwards is auto fellatio dribble
Bono has a one of those punchable faces
