OK. I ask because I genuinely worry when people say that their favorite band is Swans. I hope you're okay.

Obviously you should prioritize your own tastes and interests. If you like such-and-such music, keep going with it. You might have shit taste, yes, but you'll be happy. Don't try to ingratiate yourself to /mu/-core for some silly reason of caring what a bunch of fat anons think.

OTOH there are some Big Memes posted round these parts that are worth checking out if for no other reason than being conversant in the language, being "in on the joke". Two of the big ones are ITAOTS and Loveless, though these are long-established memes. This other anon's rec >>74891190 is also a good thing to know about because it's entry level for "weird" anglo-industrial music in general.

You're always going to hate something that the /mu/ zeitgeist seems to unironically like, overall. I personally never got into Death Grips, and I actually tried them a few times out of sheer /mu/ curiosity. All that I can hear is just boring and stupid, from the little bit I've heard. Death Grips has been a big meme for the past few years and has generated plenty of content but I think it's settling down, finally. btw while on the topic I challenge /mu/ to post me some Death Grips track that I might actually like

A person's tastes, especially of one who listens mostly to popular music such as this chart represents, depend very heavily on one's temperament and character. When it comes to people "showing off their taste" (which is cancer in the first place, this board is way too egocentric) like in chart threads, your average /mu/tant will generally have a giant fucking salad off all sorts of different shit that has nothing in common, giving off a very good indication that he's picked this music up and is now using it as a social accessory to show off how eclectic he is. Once could argue it might be good for an introduction to genres but it's not even decent at that, as a person exploring a genre should look into its roots and history first. This is quite literally just "how to be trendy: the guide", which is no surprise considering it has massive overlap with RYM charts and p4k.

Almost everything /mu/ has led me to so far doing >>74891375 has been pretty decent

I haven't actually looked at one of these in detail in a while but the "A1" entry-pattern is telling. In the various genres, the "A1" entry is generally a good recommendation for an album in the area/genre that you absolutely need to listen to: Paranoid, Kind of Blue, and Kraftwerk (Computer World would do as well, it's down to album cover at this point). OK Computer has a good spot on the image but might warrant promotion to that other top-left spot.

Where I take issue with the editorial choices are the A1 choices in "classics" and "hip hop". If you're going to post unassailable sacred cows in the A1 spots, then do it consistently. The Velvet Underground is boring and not nearly so essential as the chart makes them out to be - an A1 spot is safely inhabited instead by [Hendrix] or Beatles, and the image is dense enough that once the formality is out of the way, you can do the rest. /mu/ really (correctly) appreciates Revolver lately so that'd be a good "not-totally-safe" A1 spot in Classics, certainly much better than that Velvet Underground album. Whole musical careers have been built around the one, single song "Tomorrow Never Knows".

What exactly do you dislike about Death Grips?
>>
>>74891168
listen to what seems related to things you like and ignore the rest because /mu/ is a meme-riddled shithole of basic bitches

pay more attention to artists or albums you see mentioned once a week or once a month than every day

follow interests naturally through side projects collaborations, guest appearances, shared concert bills, and appearances on thematic compilations

ignore death grips, you didn't miss anything important and it's already long since over

Yeah, except of those two albums frequently discussed on /mu/, one is a work of a visionary and a perfectionist, which took years to record and produce. Can you guess which one?
