He isn't particularly talented at soloing (most of the time he only played 3 notes during his solos) but the idea to leave large spaces in the middle of his solos were genuinely innovative.

I think you're forgetting Captain Beefheart. I can't even begin to tell you how many kids I knew in school who could play the "Trout Mask Replica" guitar solo but couldn't play three chords of a Miles Davis song if their life depended on it because they didn't have the strength or ability to do it.
