Is Spiderland the most influential album that nobody in the mainstream knows about?

You're a retard.

that honoraryan award goes to something like merzbow - pulse demon before your shitty puberty grung.

Special snowflake

ITT: Idiots

Walk up to a group of people and ask them what they think of Slint's Spiderland and see how many of them know what you're talking about.
>>
>>74875610
I know exactly two people outside of the Internet who know Spiderland - one is an aspie girl that was just weird in general, the other is a bandmate of mine that we met at a record store buying old vynils.

Honestly, the great majority of /mu/core is virtually unknown by most people. From Animal Collective to Cap'n Jazz to even Deafheaven, it's unlikely people will recognize those.
>>
>>74875121
Yes.
>>
>>74875121
Very few people who listen to mainstream stuff have heard TVU&N. Spiderland is a little more esoteric, but your question is kind of subjective.

You loser, you're not special for liking any album. especially not one as well known as Spiderland.
>>
@74875794
Stop trying to get replies.
You already did it twice and it didn't work.
>>
>>74875671
This man speaks truth
As much as /mu/ likes to rag on "plebs" for liking Slint or Nick Drake or Sigur Rós or other similar "RYM-core"/"entry-level hipster garbage" the fact of the matter is that these people have already gone way deeper than the vast majority of the population ever will
But we're just a bunch of autists so our standards are fucked
>>
>>74875610
My English professor in college had heard of Spiderland, and liked it. And she was an old black lady who was super christian and "teacherlike" if that makes sense. It's obviously not a Beatles album, but it's fairly well known anon.
>>
>>74875794
The only one here bringing up the idea of being special is you, kiddo.

It's actually
The Normal - T. V. O. D. / Warm Leatherette
What's even more interesting is that they only release a single single and nothing more.

>>74875829
Sigur Ros is very popular, as is Animal Collective.

Your attempt at trolling is pretty Avant.
I hope nobody takes you seriously like what I'm doing.
>>
>>74875794
haha are you serious??? I bet you if I went up to 50 people on the street maybe one person would know who slint is

>>
>>74875121
Didn't Dave Grohl get a credit on that Slint documentary?
>>
>>74877270
You mean tumblrites that all look the same and have the same opinion on everything? Wew.

>>74877313
Nothing lamer than someone who literally self identifies with a subculture.

The only genuinely unique/interesting art type I've ever met was my art tutor, everyone else is a trope or an archetype
>>
its definitively the best one. /mu/ can sperg all they like but spiderland is hardly mainstream. Respected, but not really well known beyond music circles.
>>
>>74875187
It's sold at Urban Outfitters.
>>
>>74878026
no lol.
>>
>>74878215
Easy to deny it when you're a part of it mate.
>>
>>74875874
Time for me to autistic, actually they released a split with Robert Rental on Rough Trade called Live At West Runton Pavilion as well. Consider yourself told
>>
>>74875121

Blue Cheer - Vincebus Eruptum
No New York
The Original Modern Lovers
Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson early tracks

are also strong contenders
>>
>>74878386
Damn, last time I checked I couldn't find any other recording by them. Thanks for telling me anyways.

>>74878410
None of the first three were very influential, imo. You could argue for No New York, but No Wave was already a thing before the compilation was released, so...
>>
>>74875794
When was the last time you went outside? Do you think even 1 in 200 people is going to have any clue what the fuck spiderland is?
>>
>>74875121
whoops
aw
oops
>>
>>74878647
I had a friend at school (from a class of 25) who listened to Godspeed You, that's close enough, so...
>>
>>74875836
anecdotal rubbish
if you asked 1000 people if they'd heard of slint you'd maybe get 10 people
>>74877248
go to gigs
or go to art classes like life drawing or something that are open to anyone
>>
>>74878717
>>
>>74875671
Nah, everyone at least knows of Animal Collective. They were in a fucking episode of the Simpsons for fucks sake
>>
>>74878617
>no wave was already a thing
no it wasn't, no new york completely solidified the genre, some bands had been doing no wave things but the compilation made it an actual genre.
>>
>>74878871
>some bands were doing no wave things before the no wave compilation was made but the genre started with the compilation
I don't think you have thought enough about this. The compilation was further proof No Wave was a genre, not the beginning of the genre itself.
>>
>>74878865
>everyone at least knows of Animal Collective
I think you overestimate normies
>>
>>74878905
right, but before the artifical intelligence comp was released, IDM wasn't a genre, it was just new music certain artists were building towards. By setting that compilation up and identifying these styles as "IDM", the genre and identity of IDM was born.

same thing for this, just because on rym there's 5 singles predating no new york, doesn't mean no new york didn't create the actual genre.
>>
>>74879106
IDM wasn't a genre until after a few years AI was released. AI was Ambient Techno. Arguably though, not even IDM was a genre. However, unlike No Wave, there wasn't IDM before AI, but there was No Wave before No New York.

So yeah, No New York did not create a genre, arguably the earliest No Wave songs date back to 1970.
