"Hip" media outlets/music critics treated Nine Inch Nails much the same way that they treated Marilyn Manson. Trent Reznor wasn't even vaguely culturally related enough to the "hip" crowd for him to be used as a punchline or a whipping boy the way that the likes of Billy Corgan or Eddie Vedder were used. He was just this goth loser nobody liked and nobody really cared about.

saying he's on the nostalgia circuit is like an implication that nobody really cares. as though he were on the same wavelength as Iron Maiden or Journey. or just playing to holdover 90's fans like Blink 182 or something. that's just objectively not true. the spotlight on Trent now is objectively as big as its ever been, even though it's now adult contemporary and no longer edgy.
