Is Mozart's Requiem Mass the greatest orchestral piece ever written?
It's not a Requiem Mass, it's the Requiem.
And no, that would go to Mozart Symphony #41 or Beethoven Symphony #6.

Nah, it's up there but The Rite of Spring is the greatest.

It's not even his best. Mendelssohn's 4th is the best either way.

How the fuck is #41 better than #40? How the fuck is Beethoven's 6ths anywhere near 3rd or 9th?

Not sure if trollin'...

no, especially considering Mozart didn't write most of it himself. He only completed the first movement, the rest had to be completed by the composers Eybler and Süssmayr.
It's not technically orchestral in that it has choirs and soloists.
The best requiem in my opinion is by Morales. Lassus' is also excellent.
The best orchestral piece ever written is a tough one, as there are so many periods and styles to choose from, each with their own virtues. There is no "best", only each person's favorite.
Some of my favorite orchestral pieces would be Schoenberg's 5 pieces for orchestra, Mahler's 5th symphony, Schnittke 2 and Mendelssohns 1st piano concerto

Greatest orchestra and chorus work is Mahler 8.
