Does anybody else miss hipsterism? I feel like poptimist ideology has killed the last shreds of a sizable music counter-culture and has convinced for too many music "enthusiasts" that the best music out there right now is the same stuff their 14-year-old sisters have in their Spotify playlist. Even if most 2000s "indie" music was curated by handful of important sites and blogs, it at least tended to reward and celebrate structural or aesthetic originality, at least in comparison to modern "critique". I'm not saying that art is inherently less valuable when it's popular, but it's incredibly disheartening to see this board increasingly become solely /hiphop/ after being here for almost a decade. Even if we previously just followed Pitchfork and RYM curation, it was still comparatively more eclectic.
The only truly "alternative" music publication nowadays seems to be TMT and even that's debatable, and they are still riding the vaporwave hypetrain that should've died out years ago. Is there any music publication that still rewards intriguing, unique, actually independent rock or experimental electronic music? Any today that would dare to give a group like early AnCo, for example, praise?
go to RYM instead and let "critics" die

Gorilla vs Bear and The Quietus are both good.

No. I still love music and I generally don't care about music publications

Poptimism will spawn hipsterism again.

Real talk
I understand the point of a Chris Ott or something - the kind of guy who puts out long-form editorial content investigating certain trends or offering historical context
But what is the point of straight-up ratings-based critics nowadays, when anyone can check the consensus on RYM or even listen themselves to whatever they want for free? Is there a place for the stock-and-trade album critic anymore?

I like to read reviews of albums after I've formed an opinion on them to get a fresh perspective on the music. often reviews also help give me the wider context of the scene that the album was released in, especially for genres im not as familiar with.

>hipsterism == 2000s indie rock
>poptimism == 2010s hip hop
What did he mean by this?

exactly, ever since Linux, Wikipedia, Wikis, RYM etc, it's been proven that internet communities are much better than whatever the mainstream tries to do. It's time for critics to go away and stop shilling for what they've been paid to shill. And it's not like any of them are decent journalists or writers, they're literally just glorified bloggers
