How does remastering work? Pic related, Left side sounds different from the original album.
How does the left side have more of a surround sound now compared to the original album? Wasn't the track already recorded?
i'm not really sure what i prefer. Original album sounds flatter/compressed but the reverb and surround sound effects on the left side sems exaggerated sometimes. Like is it just fake detail or something

majority of times remastering is just a way for the record company to make money on a dead project.
sometimes its really good like what steve wilson does.

so in general, just stick to rips of original albums?

yeah. but sometimes its a bit different/better
there's a depeche mode song that got remastered that imo sounds better than the original

well yeah, I get that there are probably exceptions, but somehow it feels dirty to download a music track that's been basically EQ'd to another person's own subjective taste. Shit now i have to revamp my music library.

Each instrument is recorded as it's own track then mixed down into a single track. After it's mixed then the album is sent out to be mastered for different formats.(like if its a cassette the high end might be boosted to compensate for the lack of high end on a cassette) If the original multitracks(sometimes mixed but unmastered recordings are used) are still in good condition then you can repeat the mix/mastering process at a later date.
