For the person that velmetly hates this album here, what do you think about
Third Stream/Experimental Big Band in general? Is the entire movement worthless or is this just an overhyped passionless example? What are some classical composers (other than Gerswhin) that sound similar to Mingus?
Pic related to grab your attention, though Let My Children Hear Music is personally my favorite jazz album of all time.
Nah, I love third stream/experimental big band. I just don't like how much Mingus restricts his players on his albums in this style so there's less of an opportunity to display creativity in terms of improvisation.
A lot of my favorite jazz stuff is in this style (Variations In Dreamtime, City Of Glass, Ten Freedom Summers, Synovial Joints are all very obviously third stream meanwhile some of the stuff I like from guys like Jimmy Giuffre and Anthony Braxton is considered heavily classical influenced as well.)
As for classical composers, check out (with recommended works)
Moondog - s/t
Leonard Bernstein - Symphony No. 2
Maurice Ravel - Piano Concerto In G Major
Dmitri Shostakonvich - Tahiti Trot
All of these have a ton of horns with some piano and strings akin to Mingus' stuff. There's obviously other jazz influenced classical out there as well, but these are what you may wanna go for the most.
Give it up, the majority of the board is aware by now, or what's left of it. And perhaps you're taking things a little worse than you should - this isn't a smooth "jazz" album, it's Mingus for crying out loud.

Aware of what? The fact that I always start it off with a copypasta because I don't want to waste my time writing the same thing over and over again? If you go check the archives, you'll notice that every time people have seriously responded to it, I have engaged them in discussion.
