I finally got around to listening to /mu/ 's favorite girl.

Way overproduced crapola. I mean, am I the only one that got ear raped by a thousand plugins and overly complex compositions?
>>
>>74678021

>>
>>74678021

Probably. Most of the people find her music very enjoyable.

Like I understand if you don't like Grimes, but that poll is fucking stupid. There are countless great artists that the vast majority of listeners would despise - Beefheart, Can, Faust, Robert Wyatt, Swans, Mr Bungle, Xiu Xiu, to name a few. (Not comparing her to those artists, just using them as examples.) Most people have shit taste desu
>>
>>74678021
>overly complex compositions
This is true for many of her songs. I appreciate complexity in music, but if it brings out nothing to the table, it's worthless. She has nice ideas for sounds and textures but sometimes overcomplicates them for no reason and makes her music unengaging and shallow, and forgets about melodies which is the point of pop. She still has lots of time to mature and bring out that one awesome album.
>>
>>74679239

What r u talking about?!? She haz tons of great melodic sungs such as: [starts listing every single song from Vis and AA]

No dude. You're just not used to her sonic attack. This is her modus operandi: full on attack with lots of elements. It's not overproduction but maximalist production.
>>
>>74679168
>Beefheart, Can, Faust, Robert Wyatt, Swans, Mr Bungle, Xiu Xiu, to name a few.
The differenece between them and Grimes is that she actually makes gorgeous melodies on top of some experimental elements.

Their melodies are way more subdued. Grimes put the melody front and center, from poppier songs like Genesis to her more obscure work like Rosa.

its fucking pop music dumbass

whu?
>>
>>74680697
>>74680740
The complexity in her music is achieved through multiple layers of simpler elements. Sometimes she used some unexpected techniques probably because she didn't know music theory and had an "anything works" mindset.

A thought of her and her music makes me cringe only because of the /mu/ fangirls. You aren't doing her a favor.

I've started making it a point to actively avoid posting in obvious b8 threads where Grimes is concerned. So I'm staying on the down-low - at least during periods when there isn't any actual Grimes news/music to discuss.

REAL QUESTION FOR GRIMESFAGS

B. You get to fuck Grimes once, have a video copy of it but NEVER can listen to her music again and she stops making music forever

>Overly complex compositions
What?
>>
>>74687041
Yes. Synthpop could be complex too.
>>
>>74687041
Grimes utilizes looping and layering techniques, particularly with vocals; many of her songs feature layers of over fifty different vocal tracks which create an "ethereal" sound.
>>
>>74687070

And in her case it is complex. Her productions are very detailed.
>>
>>74687271
"Detailed" is something else.
>>
>>74687113
Those layers are different or each other. Her complexity is "vertical", by stacking multiple laters that interact to each other. Listen to an ordinary synthpop track and then to Be a Body and notice the difference.
>>
>>74687286
Detailed and complex.
>>
>>74687070

Hold on: it was only about complexity, not about revolutionary sound. Her music is far more complex than the minimalistic Kraftwerk. Just listen to their music. I don't imply that minimalistic = bad, far from it. Both of them are great at their craft.

>>
>>74687984
I don't know, he could start by defining "complex", sheet music, chords, tabs, anything to prove that he's not just quickly listening and making statements.
>>
>>74687744
Pegasus
>>
>>74687967
It depends on your taste. If you like:
-experimental stuff - Geidi Primes
-dreampop - Halfaxa
-synthpop/IDM/electronic music in general - Visions
-pop/catchy music in general/guitar music - Art Angels

Then they shouldn't make statements and try to prove them. He could've said "they sound more complex", which implies and makes obvious that he understands the sound but can't back it up instead of making a strong positive statement and trying to prove it.
>>
>>74688041
Why not? Form your own opinion based on those pieces of music. Don't expect spoonfeeding. No matter what I'd say you wouldn't take it seriously, so why not experience music for yourself?

>0:00
Oblivion opens with an 8 measure arpeggio synth line consisting of four bars of the 1st and 5th chord tones of the song's I chord followed by followed by four bars of the 1st and 5th chord tones of the song's vi chord. These are both highly significant details from a key standpoint because omitting the 3rd chord tone in the I chord makes it impossible to clarify whether the song is in a major or minor key, and going to the vi chord itself also functions as the relative minor's i chord.

This 8-measure figure serves as the underlying sonic structure on which the rest of the song is based (structurally speaking 'Oblivion' is another example of what is known in classical orchestral music as a passacaglia - much like the song 'Be A Body') and the way it gives exactly equal emphasis on both chords in the progression serves to maintain the underlying uncertainty about true key quality.

>00:13
As the base synth figure starts over once again, a single vocal chime comes in on the major 3rd of the I chord - momentarily tipping the harmonic balance of the song in the major's favor. However, as the synth progression modulates to the vi(i), the vocal chime enters again on the exact same note - which also happens to double as the vi(i)'s 5th chord tone - thereby negating its effect as a definitive indicator of major/minor key.
>>
>>74688096
It was you who implied that Kraftwerk or the Human League are more complex than Grimes >>74687338. You prove that first.
>>
>>74688125
>00:24
Now bearing in mind that the musical structures so far outlined continue to exist concurrently throughout most of the rest of the song (meaning that things just continue to get more texturally complex from here on out) the vocal melody line final enters with a run directly supporting - by virtually of it constantly landing on the major 3rd of the I chord - the perception that the song IS actually in the major key (if you were to listen to just the vocal parts in this song you would think that it is one of the happiest sounding things ever written - ergo musical irony, given the song lyrics' true subject matter.)

An additional note about the vocal line. If you listen carefully to the scale tones on which it rests in relationship to whether the base synth figure is currently on the I or vi(i) part of its cycle, you will notice that she never goes down to the root note of either chord unless it is not the one currently being played by the accompaniment. It's an extremely clever move in that it allows the vocal line to contribute its own level of hollowed-out eeriness to the song (chord progressions without roots can be very off-putting) without there ever having to be the need to go beyond harmonic scale tones of the major key.

All this is to say that - when people go around saying that Grimes' music is nothing more than simple, vapid pop music - they objectively don't know what they'e talking about.
