everybody always talks about CD's and vinyl but what about cassettes? Are they actually practical in 2017? Are they better than CD's or vinyl?

No.
Vinyl is popular mainly because it warms up the sound a bit. Even if a record gets a bit worn out, it mostly just adds a warm fizz in to the mix that most people find enjoyable.
Cassettes just sound plain worse than CD's or vinyl.
I've found several obscure cassette only releases that I really like but other than that they kinda suck.

What are you talking about dude? That "warm fiz" is a result of the vinyl being statically charged, and people who are serious DON'T want that. It's used because of treated properly, it's the most clear, least compressed, physical medium available.

i own cassettes, the white hiss that comes with tapes, especially on shoegaze, black metal, noise music or lo-fi tapes always adds another level of charm.
plus i can play them in my car.

Records are the perfect size. CD's and cassettes are too small and for your car only. Theres also more clarity of sound of you take care of them

Basically this, and they're really cheap to make so smaller/local bands sell them
