How would /mu/ have rated it? I've seen many people consider Government Plates the best Death Grips album.
They would rate it a light 6.
It's a popular contrarian opinion to think it's their best.
second best behind notm

It's definitely the most different from anything else they've ever done so it makes sense that most people would put it either best or worst. Personally I think it's their best by a landslide
Even Fantano admits he underrated it.

Two Heavens is great
Birds is the ultimate pleb filter
its highlights are some of their best but its weaker tracks are some of their worst
a six seems appropriate to me

There were some good parts to it, but a lot of the really weird shit they tried on GP was better executed in NOTM. I think the good thing about Death Grips is that they weren't afraid to push their sound to extremes, which is what this album is for me, an experiment. I agree with Mellon
It's more than just a sound experiment, the atmosphere is very well executed. The whole thing is conceptually built like an intense drug trip that results in ego death. It starts off with a traditional death grips track, then gets really weird and abstract, losing its own identity in the process hence the absence of mc ride. Also before they released GP they posted close up pics on social media of Ride holding shrooms. Pillbox hat introduces this from the beginning, the second verse is written from a drug's perspective as it enters a person. Sometimes it gets very specific even: "pupils swell, my entrance". On Anne Bonny Ride openly proclaims he's on pills. The constant repetition of certain phrases on the later tracks are reminiscent of thought loops that people often get caught in when on drugs. The instrumentals create a sense of paranoia to further develop this. The videos they made for each track also show hallucinations. Whatever I Want at the end blasts the listener back to reality, it's ego death. Government Plates works well in the context of their discography too since it's like a conceptual way of announcing departure from their previous sound.
