The current trend in hip-hop is a focus on songwriting over lyrics. It's basically a different genre at this point that's a lot closer to EDM than it is to traditional hip-hop. There are a few guys out at the moment that can do lyrics (Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs, Open Mike Eagle etc), but for the most part the halcyon days of Rhymesayers, Weathermen and Dej Jux-esque backpacker shit is well and truly over.

I don't really care much about battles. Guys like Royce are terrible freestylers and most of the great "battlers" couldn't make a good song to save themselves.
