hey /mu/, I'm tryna record a demo track with my drumset and one mic.

I know ideally you're supposed to use multiple mics for a single drumset, but let's say you're limited to one (a dynamic one). Where would you put it?

There's no ideal answer for this. You're not even supposed to use the same mics for different parts of the drum kit so using only one is even more limiting. Best option would be to use it as an overhead.

Generally, place it somewhere and see how it sounds. Move the mic around and see how the sound changes, and find what sounds best to you.

One dynamic mic on a kit will sound shit, best off recording several takes and move the mic to capture one drum or cymbal every take, then sync them up before mixing

makes sense, thanks for the tips. not expecting studio quality, just need it to be relatively clear. thinking about overdubbing with some drum samples later for some more oomph or w/e
>>

hmm this could be interesting. a bit more work but I am kinda worried about the cymbals' ringing clouding everything in one take
>>
>>74572176
definitely more work, but everything should be synced if you play off a cue. Also allows for a way better drum mix. Using a overhead would work though, it'll just be a bit shit
>>

true, it'd be good to be able to mix the drums individually. this is probably the best way given what tools I have atm. need to find out where to place the mic for each drum now

iirc: one mic inside the kick. SM-58's a few inches above each tom and snare. SM-57 a few inches above the high hat, don't make the mistake of having it pointing into the little gap between the top half and bottom half. Same general rule for the ride. Overhead mics go a couple more inches away from the drum kit, generally a few inches away from the cymbals.
It's been about two years since I've done this.
