80s hardcore bands didn't care much for putting out overproduced records and Husker Du's touring schedule was relentless even by 80s hardcore standards. They had plenty of time and opportunities to work out how they wanted those songs to sound before entering the studio, so actually getting the material on tape wasn't too difficult of a process.
Grant Hart and Bob Mould are also genius songwriters and excellent performers, which surely helped.
