>wanting to get into a genre that peaked 20, maybe 15 years ago
Normal people listen to new music that still has an audience so they can go to concerts and enjoy it with other people. Honestly, rock as a whole is a completely stagnant genre. I'd recommend getting into something that still has some life blood in it, like rap.
BBQ Chickens from Japan, crazy thrash pop punk hardcore.

this whole album is good, feels like a self-aware "parody" of the genre

>I want to get into pop-punk
no you don't.
Starting with The Ramones is a given.
After that, listen to The Buzzcocks.
Then jump to The Undertones,
And finally........
Graduate with The Descendants.
I just gave you a list of the creme de la creme of Pop-Punk!
You're welcome.
