When people ask me what kinds of music I like, just how autistic do I sound when I'm honest and say that I really like opera or the romantic era? I've only met one person who liked this kind of music beyond saying its nice to study with.
not at all

For reference I'm 22 and the guy I mentioned was from work and much older. Most people my age look at me strangely but are never rude about it.

Just say you like classical if you want to sound less autistic I guess. Its all the same to normies anyway.

This, I like Post hardcore and emo allot but when people ask me what I listen too I just give a joking response like 'underground 90s bands you haven't nor should listen too'
Actually trying to get into classical for the first time right now, have any n00b friendly suggestions

i understand why you try to hide that

All your favorite genres are just post-classical.
Nah, it's fine to like that and be honest but just know that's not common ground that alot of people will have. You'll probably just get an "Okay."

Some of the ones that I like:
Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto
Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony
Mahler's 5th, 7th, and 9th Symphonies
Gustav Holst's The Planets
Chopin's Piano Concerto 1, and his sonatas
Schumann, Liszt, and Ravel are fun to look through as well.
