I haven't explored a new genre in a long time and the only new shit I've listened to came from "if your birthday is called" threads. Last one was a jazz album by a finnish comedian. First time listening to anything finnish and it surprised me because it had a lot of influences from my own country's music. I remember vaguely some people here liked finnish music, why I don't know. Can anyone point me to some good finnish music?

as mentioned, Sasu is amazing. if his Vladislav Delay stuff doesn't click at first (no pun intended) give it time. Mika Vainio / Pan Sonic also made fantastic experimental electronic/techno stuff (RIP Mika). Mono Junk makes some cool oddball electro.

Finland has some great metal obviously. I mostly know about black metal, so check Satanic Warmaster, Oranssi Pazuzu, Beherit, Moonsorrow, Circle of Ouroborus, Behexen, Cosmic Church, Sargeist.

Mikko Aspa's black metal work as Clandestine Blaze and as part of DSO is good, and his noise/PE as Grunt and others is worth checking.

Finland has a great neofolk/"folk noir" thing going -- check Tenhi, Nest, October Falls. there's a very odd psych/freak folk scene with groups like Kemialliset Ystävät, but I don't know too much about that.

You have to be some kind of "drone" if you actually want to find music. Are you supposed to just know bands without hearing of them from anywhere?

i've been on an american primitive guitar streak this month. it's amazing how these people squeeze so much music out of one scale. steffen basho-junghans is the first musician in the world for me that made a pure fingerpicking technical exercise sound so expressive
