I'm sure if you were around at the time you'd think it was as ridiculous as our current political music is, it's just that as the events the songs are about aren't something you've lived through you don't have the same criticism as you do towards songs about current affairs

freedom movements started with hippies back in the 60s, so what was anti-establishment and anti status-quo was seen good and became popular.
now you only see hip-hop artists getting popular because they say i'd rather be overrated than underpaid nigga.

It's hard to imagine that most political post-punk wouldn't have come off as trite to an adult and especially a Reagon/Thatcherite in the early '80s. I even internally cringe a little bit whenever I hear the verse directed at parents in The Times They Are a-Changin'. In retrospect it sounds very short-sighted.

Not to say there aren't good political/protest songs.
