Why is this classified as a mixtape and not an album? What's the technical difference between the two?
These days it basically just means they released it for free, which is usually because they didn't clear their samples.
mixtapes are not commercially released (i.e. they do not cost money)
at least I think
other than the fact it was literally released on a cassette tape and had a really limited vinyl release, a mixtape just refers to free album.
The real question is, is Steroids actually a mixtape or an EP?

better question: why didn't you just ask google like a non-retarded person?

Mixtapes = Free.
Albums = Not free.

all music is free

damn...
I thought a mixtape was originally a homemade playlist of music that you like, before computers became a thing.
>Albums can't be free
>Albums can't be non commercial
L.O.L.
Real answer: it's just something that's le trendy. There is no technical difference, regarding something like Death Grips.
idk but this is easily their best project no questions asked.
I miss when Death Grips was this new, exciting group. Exmilitary was a fucking crazy release.

i agree i miss when it was new and exciting, but that's living in the past and to me each release has been so different and good it's just feeling like we're spoilt at this point.
i miss the hype around jenny death on /mu/ the most or just the general discussions really.
i unironically think steroids is one of the best things they've released. I can't stop listening to it, I keep coming back to it several times and there's barely a blemish on the mixtape for me. For some reason everyone thinks its just 'meh', but i think its great.

I'm with you my dude, behind exmilitary my favorite releases since then have actually been NotM and Steroids. Steroids actually has me super excited for their next project, that shit is fucking insane. I don't even care for most DG releases but that one fucked me up hard.

if a release is album-length but released for free, then it's a mixtape. length classification overrides format classification though, so steroids should be considered an ep.

What I thought but mixtapes are also (often) on spotify so I don't think that holds up
