Also keep in mind that most freestyle rappers have a massive repertoire of memeorised verses and lyrics that they can fall back on immediately if they ever get stuck.

Freestyle rap in the context of battles is pretty much dead. Everyone openly writes now. Nobody really freestyles when they are asked to freestyle any more, like on the radio or whatever.

The skill comes solely with practice. It's a combination of learning to think quicker and also having a large catalog of rhyming words and rhyming phrases you know.

Not much point in recording it over a beat. The best freestyles in the world are often worse than mediocre written stuff. It's just that the spontaneity and cleverness makes it appealing.

I'd start with a slow beat, pay attention to rhythm and staying on the beat. Then start saying stuff and try to make it rhyme. After you can do that decently, incorporate jokes or wordplay. Incorporate other things after that like alliterations, new rhythmic arrangements (flow), etc.
