You remember wrong. She said in February 2012 that her next album will be aggressive. And AA is certainly more aggressive than her past work.

Bjork and Kate Bush. They write about booooooooooooooring and safe stuff that has been down before countless times. Zero risks and pleb as fuck. No wonder they sold millions of albums; plebs eat that one up.
Meanwhile Grimes writes music INSPIRED by a video game, not ABOUT a video game. Big fucking difference. That's risky and patrician as fuck.

It is. She's inspired by the story of that game or by its characters. How is that any different than being inspired by real stories, news, films, etc? Lots of games have strong stories that could be inspirational for musicians. Try LucasArts's old game The Dig.

It was Chris Ott. This guy:
>Ott is a notorious crank who uses his Twitter feed to decry the commodification of the independent arts. At his best he can be a necessary check on the capitalist impulses of the music industry and the publications that cover it. At his worst he can be a straight-up asshole who uses his modest platform to hammer away at personal grudges, many of which seem to end up involving women who make and/or write about indie rock. To some he is an anti-hero, to others he is simply a verbal harasser.
>I would say it does, but Pitchfork has deleted plenty of articles before—in some cases, infamously so—and practically speaking, Ott is a unique case. His structural criticism was often a trojan horse for a personal vendetta, and he has gone out of his way to inflame the individuals who work at and run Pitchfork. He probably deserved something. But who exactly was punished?

Grimes' last album had at least one song on it about Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. Her album before that had at least one song on it about the existential writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas. And her release before that was an open reference to Vladimir Nobokov. She's got her bases covered when it comes to subject matter.

Ott said that. Now he's a hated and forgotten critic and Grimes is super acclaimed and more famous than before. Ott 0 - Grimes 1.

It was clearly Ott:
>Honestly Grimes is the most overrated, over-reported musical act of this decade. I love a few of her songs and she is clearly Rated just right as a fashion model and youth celebrity, but as a musician, she doesn't deserve the place she's in. There's not enough to warrant it on a musical basis, it's all "X Factor." And that's fine, but I would rather see music media focus on music and she can be a YouTube star like Rosanna Pansino. There's plenty of room to talk about her fabulous clothing and visual aesthetic. I don't know if I could talk about her music for five minutes.

>Under-rated, man, everyone gets a chance. There's no way you can be under-rated, you're just not good or interesting. Like, these kids dying to get represented by PR firms, it's hilarious, they literally can't do a fucking thing for you. The only thing you can do is make music, promote it, and see what happens. No PR firm has any more tools than any individual musician has - they just have relationships. And you can see how that worked out for Life or Death. That entire side of the house needs to burn down, and some decent, good people will burn with it, but that's the price we have to pay to get favoritism, nepotism, intimidation, rampant drug use and all kinds of other shit out of the music scene. The second PR started talking to young bands because of the steroidal influence Pitchfork had over their ability to sell on sync and other opportunities to advertisers was the second the music scene I cared about died. It's still dead. But I hope it's a phoenix.

He was completely wrong and time proved that. Anyway it was just his opinion not the absolute truth.

Spot on my ass. He just didn't get her music and he was baffled that she received so much attention. And the easy target was her modeling career and her quirky persona. DS2 actually tries to be it's own spin on the formula, it's just let down by a weird lighting engine and a small handful of suboptimal design decisions
DS3 doesn't try anything noteworthy or inventive, it's just ups the speed and lets you roll forever and calls it a day. It's shame because the design work is all there but the gameplay systems just aren't

>her music isn't interesting to me.
Say what you will, her music is a direct reflection on her as a person, and it stands to reason that anyone with at least a passing interest in her as a person would have the same about her music, since it is the best gauge of who she is. Also, if her music specifically isn't your thing, what are you doing posting about her on 4chan's MUSIC discussion board where the discussion is obviously going to revolve primarily around her music? There are plenty of other places (including other boards on 4chan) where discussion of her is rampant and NOT specifically music oriented where you can go and say your piece.

Different anon. Sonically. And subject matter-wise.

>Isn't the fact that it's way poppier sort of counter to that?
Pop music, in terms of it's power to express straightforward human emotions, is some of the most aggressive music there is. You else do you think it is so many people glob on to it despite it's frequent lack of sustainably rewarding musical complexity?

PvP in every non-Demon's souls game is shit in the series, hence why it doesn't matter if 2 has the best PvP. The world-class Memesters - I mean the big guys, like Johnny Hammersticks and Billy Kuahana - they're out there day and night, burning the midnight meme-oil, working tirelessly to craft that next big meme.
And you know what, kid? 99 times out of a hundred, that new meme fails. Imo if you read between the the lines she's far less liked by the vapid music industry/press types you're talking about than they would have you believe.
Probably the biggest single crowning achievement of her career to date is her complete artistic control over her music-making and her total independence from the established system in making it (notice how the word 'independent' is featured prominently in her twitter bio - https://twitter.com/grimezsz ) This comes as a problem because a world where musicians are able to function professionally as free agents successfully DOESN'T NEED an industry at all - thereby putting them all out of jobs. Artists like Grimes being able to exist and thrive are proof that the music industry establishment (and its music press lackeys) itself is obsolete and unnecessary. And each round of accolades/praise she gets for 'going it alone' is just another nail in their collective coffin.
So why, then, do do these soul-sucking music industry/press types go around trumpeting vapid praise in response to ANYTHING she does? Because she just so happens to embody the archetypal ideal of an artist that all these types of people claim to be working towards making the existence of possible - artists who don't NEED their help to exist.
Not to mention Grimes just happens to hit most all of the progressive leftist talking points that politically correct music culture-types live by atm (female, underdog, self-sufficient, not traditionally attractive, into social issues like environmentalism, etc.) Meaning that there is no way these people can say anything untoward about her without sounding like/being huge hypocrites.

[1/2]
>>
>>74419141
[2/2]

Imo the artistry present in Grimes' music is fantastic and absolutely worthy of all but the most ardent praise you see bandied around about it. However I don't believe for a second that all the praise you hear about her/her music in the music press has anything to do with that fact in and of itself - a belief that I happen to know Grimes' herself shares with me (see this interview starting from the 11:00 mark - https://soundcloud.com/seli8/grimes-visits-breaking-and-entering and pay close attention to her comment about early album reviews of Art Angels being vapid puff pieces.)
Tbh I actually find the whole situation incredibly amusing/satisfying because the entire established music industry/press has essentially cucked itself into having to heap the sort of high praise usually only reserved for industry plants (because of needing to make returns on investments) about an actually legitimately talented artist who owes them nothing in response. The whole situation is fucking glorious.
>>
Fuck off already

Although I personally don't enjoy Grimes' last two albums (the highest victims of those vapid puff pieces), I would love to show this to any grimesfag who asks people to "explain why she's so critically acclaimed".
>>
>>74419495
>I would love to show this to any grimesfag who asks people to "explain why she's so critically acclaimed".
Critically acclaimed by vapid music critics who don't actually know much of anything about music or music history prior to 80 or so years ago. To be clear, her music is ABSOLUTELY deserving of extremely high praise by people who actually know a thing or two about music criticism (and I'm saying that as someone who has studied and currently practices music history/composition/performance professionally chiefly of the variety more than 80 years old*.) The thing is, most music journalists of today seem to be of the "relevant music only really started in 1910" category. And for people truly that ignorant, there are only really two aspects of Grimes' music that are simple enough for them to latch on to: her often pop-music-infused drum patterns and the overall sense of hype surrounding her music in general.

* aka 'classical' music
>>
>>74419676
Just curious, what aspects of Grimes' music do you think ARE deserving of that "extremely high praise"?
>>
https://twitter.com/Grimezsz/status/894036586014285824

>>
>>74419712
Things like emulating contrapuntal vocal polyphony in the way she overdubs vocal tracks, or how she often uses weird sounding vocal samples or non-musical sounds to approximate drum/percussion elements.
Or - something I've only recently started noticing happens a lot in her music - using chord substitutions which are radical to the underlying harmonic structure of her songs. Eg. the main looping chord progression for the song Circumambient - which is in a minor key - contains a MAJOR I chord. Which SHOULD NOT WORK AT ALL from a technical music theory perspective. But which does, because of the clever way she weaves the minor intervals in the songs' base scale around it temporally and primarily just in the vocal tracks.
Which is to say, stuff that only someone with years/decades of professional music training/critical listening experience would be fully able to understand (although I should point out here that thorough understanding is purely optional to enjoyment of something - especially when it comes to works of art.)
My overall point here though is that there are PLENTY of deep, geeky musicological (and thematic in terms of lyrics and the like) things to dissect, appreciate in Grimes' music. However, the fact remains that only a very small portion of the "professional" music journalism writing you see out there today about her/her music ever touches on these sorts of things. Most of it is focused on shallow forms of music hype because (1 Grimes' music IS extremely hypable, (2 shallow hype writing about music is relatively easy for readers to understand, and (3 writing shallow hype criticism about music is about all most music journalists are capable of putting together - as evidenced by the fact that most of the criticism you see professionally published today about music (NOT just pieces about Grimes' music) is just surface-level music hyperbole.

I don't get why she makes you so mad. Also I don't get why do you imply that all music has to be thought provoking in order to be considered great. She makes music that comes from her heart and mind, she pured her creativity into making it. Not only it's emotional but it's also very, very likeable.
>as in she's too popular
Too popular? Are you kidding me? She didn't even sold 1 mil albums and she has zero big hits in mainstream.
>is erroneously hyped up as a genius
That's a subjective thing and you can't control what other people think about her. If they hype her as agenius what's your problem? In what way it affects you directly? It's just their opinion after they were impressed by her music.
Genius: extraordinary intellectual power especially as manifested in creative activity
Cosidering she did all her music mostly by instinct (little or no music knowledge), calling her a music genius is not an overstatement. She did almost everything in her music all by herself. How many female artists could claim that?
>its not so much that i dislike her, but I really despise the music industry and she is very much a darling of / accepted by most of the stuff i hate.
It's not her fault but yours in this situation.

Excellent reply, classical music anon.

Further proof: Grimes dissed P4K on her song California and they were still "forced" to give her album Art Angels a BNM and #3 on their AOTY list. She's the boss.

Meme and truth are colliding here
DaS2:
>worst sound, including music
>best pvp system, worst dueling community (remember all the santiers, red iron twins, jester tops?)
>most weapons, least actually good weapons
>God the lava at Iron Keep bridge was a fucking eyesore
>worst base game bosses by far
>scholar literally casualises the game
>pre-patch Shrine of Amana though
>buff stacking

DaS2 pvp community was arguably worse given the fact it conformed to whatever new meta Iron Pineapple or Sunlightblade released, and was so ridden with honourfags that you'd be buffing for a minute before any fight started. Make no mistake I made good use of Sacred Oath/GMB stacking because every bitch out there was spamming Great Resonant Soul which was OP for most of the peak pvp period.
Dark Souls 3 pvp is worse for different reasons, mostly down to the community alone.
