>album with 18 songs referred to as a 'double album'
>another album has 18 songs and is just an 'album'
Is it just a stylistic choice to call a really lengthy release a double album?
What are the qualifications of such a label?
And yes, I know some double albums have differing conceptual themes on each disc but a lot don't.
What makes up a double album? It basically taking two CDs/LPs. There are double albums with 4 tracks.
An album with two discs.
In the digital age it's really just a stylistic choice though.

A double LP takes up two 12" records. A full LP can be filled with up to 44 minutes of audio when spun at 33 rpm. Anything longer can be considered a "double LP," or "double album."
This can be confusing, though, because a typical CD can carry up to 72 minutes of audio.
Embryonic was released on CD as a single disk and a double disk and I got the double disk limited edition cause it looks cooler (obviously) but I wish I didn't because now I can't listen to Powerless and The Ego's Last Stand back to back I have to physically change the disk in my car it sucks what a fuckn drag. But yeah it's just a stylistic choice. They can charge more for selling 2 disks even though they don't need to and you the consumer will buy it because it's special. Nonetheless it's a great album. Probably their best along with Yoshimi. (Unpopular opinion The Soft Bulletin fuckn sucks)
The same reason why a Gerogerigegege album can have 75 tracks and not be a double album but a Minutemen album can have 43 tracks and be a double album. It's mostly track length in the digital age.

in modern days, yes. Most albums that have come out since the invention of the CD run for over 44 minutes, since they have the space to make it that long. Like >>74374057 said, it's mostly just a stylistic choice at this point.
Bands that press onto vinyl do typically recognize that their albums are considered "double albums," though. I think I recall Kevin Parker calling Currents a "double LP" on his Narduwar interview. The term just isn't thrown around that much for people who don't really care.
>quadruple album
