Zappa was part of the same counterculture as the so-called hippies, but he didn't like the trendy commercialism of "flower power" and "psychedelic music", which he didn't consider a real genre.

not true, boy waters and gilmour said before dark side that they tried drugs and quit several years ago meaning with syd and stuff. its on the pompeii documentary. besides they are serious musicians they arent going to load up on a big gig with zappa seriously? drink a little smoke a little maybe but i doubt pot or acid (unless youre santana or something). waters era floyd werent big drug takers even if their music is trippy

Zappa didn't hate hippies in as much as he was disappointed what the hippies had become.

He saw potential in them in the early days, but then they got main stream media exposure, and the wolves started creeping in and commercializing them till it was nothing more than a fashion style. Very much like what happened to punk rock once upon a time. (And Zappa even had his say about that on Tinsletown Rebellion)
