I'm pretty sure it's a distorted synthesizer played with portamento. It's difficult to tell if it's an attempt to emulate another instrument because of the distortion, but I guess it sounds like a weird guitar.

Thanks, it didn't sound like a synthesizer at all to me (like one you would hear in synthpop?) so I was confused. Interesting to know it can produce such sounds as well.

Don't feel stupid, I've always kinda wondered myself. I suppose a distorted synth tone would be my best guess as well but I couldn't say for sure. DG have a lot of stuff where I can't tell if it's a synth, guitar or a sample/edited/distorted sample of something. Hard to tell coming from a group who built a song around a sample of a fucking printer.
