How do you compose simple electronic music?

I'm an indie game dev, and I've been having a lot of problems with getting solid music for my game. I've been using free music from repositories, but I don't feel live I've been able to find anything that works perfectly with my game.

How do I get into producing simple beats with free/cheap software? Is it possible for someone with little experience to make some simple looped tunes with a trial of FL studio or something?

Do you guys have any tips?

Gonna need more info. How long do these tracks need to be?

For reference, Super Crate Box has INCREDIBLY catchy music despite tracks all being between 10-60s long

Is this a more long-form game or something arcade-like?

Do you want shit like this that;s involved but terse?

Or more ambient tunes that flow with the game like this?

I love Super Create Box's soundtrack. The stand in music is similar to it, but more JRPG in sound (which is not what I want)

The game is a super simple "arcade" style game, but it's not incredibly action packed. Think like one of those jumping platform games on IOS (except not as lame).

I don't want the music to be incredibly fast, or hard hitting, but I'm still aiming for something that invokes a slight sense of urgency while you play, without getting in the way.

Every time I try and come up with a drum beat or anything on my own, it sounds like a shitty 90's hardbass track.

Just a few things off the top off of my head.
1. Bass comes first
2. Keep the melody simple
3. Arpeggiators and Portamento are your friends
4. If you use a premade synth, change it in some way or reverse engineer it
5. Have an intro and a loop point
6. Tempo of 160~180 will do
7. Fuck with the equalizer til it sounds "just right"
8. MINOR KEYS MINOR KEYS MINOR KEYS

Don't expect anything on the level of ZUN, but it'll do

How difficult is it to learn? I taught myself how to make the whole game, how much harder could it be to learn the basics of electronic music production if I already know music theory?

Thanks anon! I'm just looking for some nice background noise to make it less awkward when you're playing, I'm not intending on making the next Redbone or something.

Literally a trip to 8-bit Music Theory on YouTube
