Why has this formula worked so well for so many bands? Girlpool, Diet Cig, Frankie Cosmos, there are a ton more I've seen at shows that I couldn't name. Why are they so popular? It sucks

I'm sad that girlpool changed into such bland indie rock. That said, I don't really think they had any other direction to go after their first album.
