Tyler Childers' Purgatory.

It's not officially out yet, but even on a shitty NPR stream Childers comes through with very well-structured traditionalist country. It's reminiscent of "the good ol' days" of country, and almost sounds like it could have come straight out of 1979. The lyrics aren't overly politicized, it's one of the least edgy alternative country releases in a while. Rather, Childers decides to focus on creating detailed, pastoral images out of the stories on his songs, a welcome break from the likes of Jason Isbell and the Drive-By Truckers - a break with depth, at that. The only iffy part of it is that his vocals are somewhat hit-and-miss, such as on "Tattoos," but more often than not he carries the album well.

It'll probably grow into one of my most favorite albums of 2017. Check it out, "Whitehouse Road" and "I Swear (To God)" especially.

Love this guy. I've been going to his shows for years since he was playing open mic nights. This new album is pretty great but it's a shame he didn't get to use his live band for it, they sound great together. On the live band part: Yeah I thought the new version of White House Road was pretty uninteresting. His voice and the song itself is great, but the backing band is just so dull. The Red Barn Radio recording is so much better. Of course, that could just be because I heard that version first.

Absolutely. From A Room isn't bad, but Traveller was the album that got the public into Alt-country like him, Sturgill, and Isbell. Considering the bro-country releases that this album snubbed for the Album of the Year CMA, it's worth a listen.
