paul mccartney's solo career:
>fun
>many memorable pop songs
>talented musicianship
>no pretentiousness
>making music for the hell of it

john lennon's solo career:
>oh poor me me mam's dead my life's hard
>pretentiousness
>overtly political
>repetitious and boring
>>
>Paul's digs against John:

Too many people going underground
Too many reaching for a piece of cake
Too many people pulled and pushed around
Too many waiting for that lucky break

That was your first mistake
You took your lucky break and broke it in two
Now what can be done for you?
You broke it in two

>John's digs against Paul, in response to the first ones:

So Sgt. Pepper took you by surprise
You better see right through that mother's eyes
Those freaks was right when they said you was dead
The one mistake you made was in your head

Ah, how do you sleep
Ah, how do you sleep at night

You live with straights who tell you, you was king
Jump when your momma tell you anything
The only thing you done was yesterday
And since you're gone you're just another day

Ah, how do you sleep
Ah, how do you sleep at night

Ah, how do you sleep
Ah, how do you sleep at night

A pretty face may last a year or two
But pretty soon they'll see what you can do
The sound you make is muzak to my ears
You must have learned something in all those years

Ah, how do you sleep
Ah, how do you sleep at night

Look, Paul's work in The Beatles is brilliant, but his solo work is terrible. It's nothing but plastic, soulless commercial stuff. At least John experimented.

I dont care for the beatles, can someone explain this?

The concept of the song itself.

Note how all of Paul's experimental ideas weren't for his own songs, but for John's. He was too much of a pussy to compromise his commercial appeal.
>>
>>74263572
>The concept of the song himself

Wow, what a maverick. He really put his commercial appeal at risk there

I've listened to all of McCartney's works. He had individual songs that reached the heights of what he produced in The Beatles, but his albums were generally far from impressive.

Paul and George had far exceeded John as songwriters by the time the Beatles broke up. No surprise that John only kept pumping out more and more autistic shit, most likely due to his drug (and wife) abuse.

Except Ram, Band on the Run, Mccartney and McCartney II are all more sonically adventurous and had superior songwriting to most of John's music.

John aped avant garde - his attempts at noise and musique concrete are juvenelia, to be said - dirtied it with lazy, self absorbed political teachings. He thought he was a messiah but he was just a junky loser.

Even george was more experimental than john. Check out his 60's electronic work if you haven't

I love Paul but I really feel like he was a control freak when it came to the direction and sound of the band. Just listen to the lyrics of 'we can work it out' and you'll see the kind of personality he was

pauls attitude during the final years of the beatles pissed me off at first, but the group needed SOME direction otherwise they would've just quit after Epstein died. I dont agree with the way Paul got along with Martin though
>>

This. I couldnt agree more.
>>
>>74267097

it's a mix between both of these. someone needed to step up after epstein but also i bet paul was annoying in that way. john was honestly more annoying though near the end his god complex was out of control but part of me pitys him too because he seemed like a scared lost boy. and without that era he wouldn't have made plastic ono band which is like pretty amazing for the egotistical autistic ramblings it is in the sense that if anyone was ever justified in doing a diary type indulgent messiah complex album like that it was john fucking lennon you know

Mister marks can you find for me
Someone strong and sweet fitting on my knee
She can keep her job if she gets it wrong
Ah, but mister marks I won't need her long
All I need is help for a little while
We can take dictation and learn to smile
And a temporary secretary is what I need for to do the job
I need a
Temporary secretary, temporary secretary
Temporary secretary, temporary secretary
Mister marks could you send her quick
'cause my regular has been getting sick
I need a
Temporary secretary, temporary secretary
Mister marks I can pay her well
If she comes along and can stay a spell
I will promise now that I'll treat her right
And will rarely keep her 'til late at night
I need a
She can be a belly dancer
I don't need a need romancer
She can be a diplomat
But I don't need a girl like that
She can be a neurosurgeon
If she's doin' nothing' urgent
What I need's a temporary, temporary secretary
I need a, I need a
Temporary secretary. temporary secretary
Temporary secretary, temporary secretary
Temporary secretary, temporary secretary
Now mister marks when I send her back
Will you please make sure she stays on the right track
Spoken:
Well I know how hard it is for young girls these days in the face of everything to stay on
The right track
What I need's a temporary, temporary secretary
Temporary secretary I need a /
Temporary secretary, temporary secretary,
Temporary secretary I need a
Temporary secretary. temporary secretary,
Temporary secretary.

need i say more?

Band on the Run
Venus and Mars
Wings Over America

Paul was a much better musician than John. Paul actually worked with Martin on all of his songs, John simply sent Martin a shitty, poorly recorded demo and said "go nuts".

People would have caught on with John's bullshit and painfully mediocre ideas and music. The only reason his post-Beatles era is accepted is because of his non-self kys.

the only thing a beatle did that comes close to pet sounds is all things must pass

A lot of people like to rag on paul because he's "the fun one" and john's "the serious one". Of course in reality, people are actually more than one dimensional stereotypes.

I John's stuff more in the Beatles. I think Imagine and Plastic Ono Band are still probably better than most of Paul's solo stuff. That said, once you get past his early career, John's music took a nosedive. Sometime in New York is fucking boring white guy wannabe funk. Walls and bridges doesn't fare a whole lot better, save some really great singles. Double Fantasy was good, but still bloated. I think Milk and Honey had a really interesting and promising direction that could have rejuvenated John's career by embracing a more stripped down style. Then he died so we'll never really know.

Paul put out plenty of emotional and artistic shit too with McCartney II, RAM, and the Firemen. Once you really dig into his solo stuff, it's hard to rag on him. Even now as an old guy, it's nice to see him taking inspiration from younger indie stuff.

Basically my opinion is that John was always a singles guy. He put out one or two fantastic singles on each album and then phoned in the rest. Paul seems like more of a consistency guy where each album is a coherent artistic piece, but he rarely struck gold. I think that's why Beatles stuff trumps any John/Paul solo stuff.
