I think he is aware. Gira went to art school. Swans was inspired by joy division and other Gothic post rock/post punk. Pretty sane art student material.

Yeah their fans are often teens that think they're "enlightened" or have superior artistic eccentricity or whatever but swans just make cool music. Gira is not insane.
