>The Fragile [Nothing, 1999]
After six fucking years, genius-by-acclamation Trent Reznor delivers double-hoohah, every second remixed till it glistens like broken glass on a prison wall. Is the way he takes his petty pain out on the world a little, er, immature for a guy who's pushing 35? Never mind, I'm told--just immerse in the music. So I do. "Dream job: emperor," it says. "More fun than death by injection." B

>And as the singer-songwriter continues to wrestle with the same feelings of stasis, hopelessness, and despair his lyrics have chronicled for nearly three decades, his heroes (David Bowie, Prince), contemporaries (Chris Cornell), and acolytes (Chester Bennington) are dying at an alarming rate. Maybe HTDA didn't work out as well as he wished.
During that period, I stopped following what he was doing, but as far as I can tell, it was kinda disastrous, nobody got what they were doing and people complained because Mariqueen isn't an opera singer.
Actually, you can find many elements of HTDA in his new stuff (similar lyrical themes, Atticus, etc.)
>>
I'm not a huge NIN fan but I liked Year Zero. The synths on that album sound great and there is some impressive programming going on. I don't like his more guitar based tracks though, unless he's using it more as a texture like on "me, I'm not" or the social network score.

I kinda wanted to post Trent on that "will we ever see another Frank Zappa" thread. He may not be as prolific as Zappa (what like 60+ albums over his career?) Trent has drifted into enough obscurity that he can do whatever the hell he feels like musically, has the financial means to do so; Also, has the drive and talent to do it. I think his new ep every six months thing could get really interesting.
>>
>>74228060
It's a trilogy of EPs so he probably won't keep this thing but I believe big man Reznor will keep releasing stuff after that.
>>
>>74228235
You're right about the ep's we're getting now. It's a trilogy. However, he keeps saying in interviews it's not worth the time to make a full length album given how people "consume it and forget about it in two days." I think if these eps workout for him that's how he'll continue to release new music. He also mentioned wanting to work with orchestrated music and exploring different avenues there. Whether or not he will, remains to be seen but he's definitely thinking about it.
>>
>>74228325
Ah shit Trent talked about orchestrated music. Idk how he would fit that in NIN. But nothing can stop him now.
>>
>>74221344
Guys where do i go from here?
I've listened to all his albums, HTDA and movie soundtracks
I'm looking for bands with interesting premises, i'm listening now to Death Grips and Blanck Mass but i don't want to listen to nu-metal bands or industrial-rock-metal bands like Ministry, where do i go from now? I really love synths
>>
>>74228390
"What makes you hopeful about music’s future?
I still feel like a student who has more musical places to go. I’m in awe of the compositional possibilities still out there. When I work on new music, nine times out of ten, I feel like I’m tuned into something I haven’t explored before. And working on films with Atticus [Ross] is teaching me so much. I’m interested in learning more about traditional orchestration; there’s harmonic exploration I want to do. There are a million rhythmic things I want to explore. My optimism comes from the possibility of expanding my musical brain."

I can definitely see why any of those might be considered the best. The Ghosts photography definitely has an odd, unearthly feel to it at times and the hard-edged geometric forms from The Slip are surprisingly striking. The Fragile

Things Falling Apart literally created a world that I lived in for many years.
Like, the sound painted this picture in my mind of a world that resembled the sound ... that period of my life affected my psyche forever.
>>
>>74235611

The Slip is underrated AF.
Back in the day people totally shat on it, but looking back now from the perspective of it being a lo-fi grungey garage-rock aesthetic type album it takes on a whole new meaning.
>>
>>74235883

Someday I'm going to use A.I. to recreate the Broken - The Fragile era NIN and have Trent as by VR husbandou
>>

Trent knows his records will be loved later than sooner.

Fragile had the same curse. Every album after was the same with the people.
>>

I get a small bit of personal, irrational embarrassment because I was so big into NIN before I started growing my musical taste. I can't argue that the songs are good, are influential - and I really love PHM and Broken - but NIN and Trent seem so corny to me now.

His lyrics are embarrassing for his age, for someone who has consistently written lyrics for decades and his guitar, hard-rock sound has not evolved. NIN is like an edgier-U2...
>>

This is just straight up wrong

And honestly, lyrics do not matter. Though I will say that I find the sincerity and lack of pretension in Trent Reznor's lyrics to be very refreshing.
>>
>>74236232
They're both arena rockers with big presentation and trite lyrical content. Two bands(artists) with huge followings, dedicated fans and people who are ready to come to their defense at any moment.

>>74236269
Not meant to be condescending. I just listened to pretty much nothing but The Mars Volta and Nine Inch Nails for some formative years, and then explored music.

>>74236285
I don't mean he has never evolved completely, but whenever he wants to do a aggressive rock song it always has the Year Zero/Fragile/With_Teeth effects, its just too hard not to notice it. And his lyrical content may be truly sincere, which is fine and I don't hate on Trent for being honest, but it is just corny.
>>
>>74236285
lol
hes got like one guitar tone ffs

i like him but still, lets be honest
>>
>>74236329
I really like the electronic production Trent has moved onto, I just wish he would stop the arena rock anthems or stop making sonic allusions to them.
>>
>>74228060
>I kinda wanted to post Trent on that "will we ever see another Frank Zappa" thread. He may not be as prolific as Zappa (what like 60+ albums over his career?)
He thinks in a similar way as Zappa does, minus the silly humor and satirizing. Trent is more of a serious musician but he doesn't churn out nearly as much material because he works on it more.
>>
>>74228325
>he keeps saying in interviews it's not worth the time to make a full length album given how people "consume it and forget about it in two days."
This is exactly what the current musical zeitgeist is, I had to point this out myself to several music journalists this year and even they didn't really get it, despite having succumbed to it.

Trent is on the ball, we are past albums, make several EPs in a year, stay hyped, stay relevant.
>>
>>74236329
>They're both arena rockers with big presentation and trite lyrical content. Two bands(artists) with huge followings, dedicated fans and people who are ready to come to their defense at any moment

Nothing related to their sound and lyrically very questionable comparison.

Okay. As I've said. Not alike
>>
>>74236481
Nah, I think that they are alike. It's an apt comparison to explain what kind of music listeners their fans are.
>>
>>74236344
guitar was never his strong point, early career he had to go out of his way to learn it because it didn't interest him, but it was the instrument he needed to have too get accepted in the late 80's-early 90's.
>>
>>74236505
are you a holocaust denier by chance?

>>
>>74236538
>So buttblasted he has to call the other person a /pol/tard/nazi

Why am I not surprised.
>>
>>74236580
It's become a signature sound thanks to TDS. People associate Nine Inch Nails involves droning guitar work, so that's why it stays. And since enoughPeople (not you, but people who go to shows) like it, and concert work is how he gets his money, he's gotta lure them in with the guitar rock songs to fund everything he does outside of the two dozen or so songs you judge his 30 odd year career on.
>>
>>74235611
Listen to the rehearsals of it too. Absolutely god tier
>>
>>74223679
I bought a CD of TDS and listened to it in my car until I realized it was the perfect album. I listened to Pretty Hate Machine and didn't like it. I haven't listened to anything else (except his recent singles) because I don't want to be disappointed more.
If anyone has recs for me I'll take them

it didn't have to do with /pol/ - it was about your trying to pull a ridiculous elaboration to excuse the existence of something. Like someone may say the holocaust never happened because "really, when you rationalize it, the gas chambers would be too costly and there simply weren't as many Jews in existence as were claimed to have died"; "Trent uses this guitar tone because people love it, and he was never really great at the guitar, so he just gives them what they want and it really isn't his fault".
