Well for me personally when I was depressed I couldn't even listen to music without wanting to shut it off. It just amplified that empty feeling. Silence was more appealing then because for whatever reason it gave me time to be at peace with myself and myself alone.

I know that feel. I used to really like death cab for cutie (yeah I know that they're generic indie garbage but whatever) and would always listen to it with my girlfriend. Then she left me and I got super depressed and now I can barely listen to them anymore.

Not everyone listens to the music the same way.
Asked a coworker whether they form emotional bonds to the music they listen to, or if they just like the beat or whatever, and they told me the first one. They like pop music and they find, I assume, an emotional outlet elsewhere. Doesn't make us any better or worse than anyone else, so kindly tip your fedora somewhere else.
