>It's supposed to be bad

Since it's not any different really from what he or any other rapper usually unironically raps about, I have a really hard time believing that this is the case.

It's the same thing as when Fantano talks about Death Grips. He's always going on about McRide playing a "character" to excuse his violent and ridiculous lyrics. Like the music has these multiple dimensions and layers, which it doesn't, or not as much as he'd like at least. (And I actually like Death Grips mind you)

>>
>>74206162
If you had done any research, you would have actually noticed that kendrick is known to assume different characters often changing his inflection. I would say in conjunction with his big vocabulary, strong metaphors and rhyme patterns it is his trademark.

The thing about him is that he embraces the good and the bad alike, tries to be real where he came from much unlike Lupe Fiasco who is known to be preachy.
>>
>>74206162
As for Kendricks ability, take a look at his Holy Key Verse:

Everything I touch may disintegrate into dust (uh huh)
Everything I trust may dishonor me in disgust (come on)
Everything is everything, affidavits and wedding rings
Out for blood on my higher horse, I report what it was
I don't wear crosses no more, Yeshua's coming back
I ain't scared of losses no more, I see life in that
I don't resonate with the concept of love and hate
Cause your perspective is less effective and rather fake
The universe and the heavens work in my DNA
Kendrick said "Fuck Mother Earth," that's PSA
The land of the wicked, the foundation of Lucifer's spirit
Walking zombies and spellcatchers, I pray for forgiveness
Uncle Bobby and Paul June is lost again
The underworld and the fourth dimension, my family's in
The big money, the fast cars, my life produced
The blocks I connected while re-building this Rubik's cube
So what you look up to?
Fame and fortune, bitches, Porsches
Sources with designer thing
Brand endorsement joining forces with sorcerers signing me
Law enforcement their forces, tortures us with violent speed
Fuck your boss's employment my joy is to see all you bleed
Two knew Royce's with choices of color my desire need
Crab and Oyster with gorgeous abortions, I require thee
Flesh and poison the point is the reason
You won't die in peace
Open door for my boy, now they eating, we say, finally
I destroy and divorce what you eating, don't you hire me
Tape recording my voices and tweak it
Let's play hide and seek
War distortion and forfeit this evening, you should try at least
I'm restoring the portrait of feasting, nigga, I am beast
I don't like to sleep, I'm up like coyote, I might OD
Hair like ODB, I'm off a higher need
Khaled is valid, I been looking for inspiration
But when you the only king, you the only one in the matrix

>>

but that is the point, it's like comparing fitzgerald to tarkovskij, both differnt mediums, yet well versed in their craft.

Can this verse encompass Goethe, Tolstoi or anyone else? No, but compare him to his peers and you will see that not only many comment on his ability but if you actually compare his pure use of syllables on a technical level you will that out there, there are maybe just 5-10 rappers that can actually touch him. Pharaohe Monche, Eminem before he went bad, Big Pun, MF Doom and the like which also is hard to call since all are so widely different in character and style.

I think again that you should do your research before assuming things.

'Sing about me' is about the loss of a friend, what is left when you suddenly exit the world and the impact your life and death has to those around you.

'u' is mostly about self reflection, doubt, depression and suicidal tendencies, blaming yourself for survivors guilt and sudden fame and not being able to save everyone and I could go on and on.

To me it comes off that you were just here to air out your opinion withour being willing to do the research to back it up iE. listening to some albums or tracks at least, educating yourself.
>>
>>74206558
>Pure use of syllables
What? Amount of syllables doesn't make you great lmao
If you mean syllables in terms of rhyme, Kendrick isn't that crazy. Pretty basic actually. And when you have a verse so dense you're bound to get rhymes on accident. Kendrick is a classic example of not knowing when to edit, and also not speaking emotionally, and being forgettable.
The only CLEVER line in there is the
>The block I connected while rebuilding this Rubik's Cube
It illustrates the puzzle Kendrick is trying to piece together while using wordplay to say he also "connected the block" as in neighborhood.
>>
>>74206623
I have to disagree respectfully. Could you point out another MC that qualifies for the criteria you mentioned? Maybe it helps me to understand where you are coming from.

Nas, his verses tend to say all that's needed to be said without overdoing it, with maybe a little flair. A lot of golden age MCs were good at this.

I think in general the quality of discussion has plummeted the last few years. It's no secret. I know we can have memes and all but at least 2010ish people actually bothered to explain their thoughts instead of just blurting out some shitpost that doesn't inform on the topic. Like today it's 90% shitposting on a very basic level that's not even funny and the rest is somewhat discussion.
>>

>>
>>74206804
Thanks for keeping it civil, though I would say it's not "too chaotic or too much". Lupe is the definition of too much. Listen to Mural. But I love it. Because Lupe not only has rhyme schemes for days, his lyrics are extremely dense but all carry meaning to what the song is about.
Kendrick just kind of meanders around without saying anything poignant or clever.
>>
>>74206851
This is what's still great about 4chan. Two people can choose to have a discussion while the rest spams mindless trash. It's like when you come here evreyday and hide every grimes thread on the catalog before replying to better threads.
>>
>>74206868
To be honest, I've been a fan of Lupe's since day one and in a perfect world, for me he would beat kendrick in terms of his ability but being a label issue or not, Lupe has released some hot trash albums like Lazers or Food and Liquor 2 where he was either pressured into releasing material that was very unfocused and sounded off or nobody kept him in check.

Tetsuo was great though.
>>
>waaaahh quit criticizing my music
>>
>>74206911
Oh I agree, Lupe's music has been quite hit or miss but man when he's on he's on. Tetsuo had some great cuts. Lupe definitely exceeds most rappers in pure ability and he's a real intelligent dude, but obviously that doesn't always translate to good music.

Considering how many albums Kendrick has released in a row now that aren't half as good as his early material, I wonder if it's even possible to wake the Stans up from their fanboyism. >>

Lol yeah, but what kind of music would /mu/ listen to in the 80s? Bob Dylan?
>>
>>74208100
Probably

Sir if you dont mind me.asking whose your favorite music artist

>iron maiden is for betas, listen to Possessed and hellhammer
>>

I posted in this thread while liking both Kendrick and Kool G Rap. I think Kool G is sadly often overlooked because he came between Rakim and Nas, era-wise. A missing link if you will.
>>
>>74204639
This is indeed great
>>
The gun shot as part of the beat thing isn't new thing btw.

People were doing this when kendrick was a baby.
>>
>>74207147
Close your eyes and listen to the lyrics of this song before you associate a whole genre with that trash.

I was sure this line was by J. Cole but I looked it up and it actually was by Kendrick, that's embarrassing
>>
Who are the truly unique and thought provoking music artists /mu/? I always hear Bob Dylan is the greatest lyricist or is that just a meme

If you like rap but apparently its gorilla shit, who should I listen too to take steps towards "real" music
>>
>>74211181
Not all rap is gorilla shit. People just need to stfu about Kendrick being some kind of demi god or w/e
>>
>>74211181
Blackalicious.

You need to really listen to the lyrics to fully appreciate.

Prose and rhetoric is hard for some people to understand Anon, don't just shit everywhere when you don't get it
>>
>>74211427
>prose and rethoric
>>Fuck who you know! Where you from, my nigga?
wew
>>
>>74211385
I have Nia, is a classic album I used to just get high too and listen in highschool over and over gave me good vibes
>>
>>74207241
Who would you consider a good lyricist then
>>
>>74211574
Yup you're right, everything that line contains is the totality of what it's meant to convey and why

You obvious don't want to examine anything you don't like, I don't even like Kendrick much but I can at least see what he's doing
>>
>>74211794
Just don't use words you dont understand anon.
>>
>>74211843
He listens to Kendrick, what do you expect?
>>
>>74211843
I don't get what words I used incorrectly
Plz don't just Google definition of prose and rhetoric, cause they both have really broad uses in artistic mediums
>>
>>74211927
>>74211843
Nvm I thought maybe for a second people wanted to actually have conversation, but you guys just want to fling shit in every direction
>>
>>74211990
Not every direction, just yours.
>>
>Bad girl RiRi, those niggas know my name
>They be all over my pussy when they not snorting cocaine
>But none of them ain't loyal, them niggas and shit
>I fuck them then throw them into a bottomless pit

What a horrible feature. Like WTF was Kendrick thinking?
>>
Kendrick's appeal is not that he's deep but that he makes "concious" shit accessible in a way that pretentious fuckwits like Lupe Fiasco couldn't. He's the first guy since 2Pac to make that shit interesting.
>>
>>74212030
Yeah I mean normies dig Kendrick. What else do people need to realize he's garbage?
>>
>>74211574
When you actually grow up in that situation you know the meaning behind a line that simple and why it's fucked up.

I grew up in one of the worst parts of west Baltimore, Sandtown. Back in the 90s shit was broken down into communities, and even though the whole era was Sandtown you had CBS(yes that was a gang/it's own community) and EA(Edmonson Avenue) and all 3 hand beef. You couldn't walk across the Mount Street Bridge without seeing CBS graffiti and being confronted by kids from CBS who patroled that bridge ans gave you shit in asking where you're from. I grew up a few blocks down from where Freddie Grey lived and was killed. I had people in the area and you couldn't go there without conflict, and it was only a few blocks.

I grew up walking pass the police station to go to school everyday, where the officers who killed Freddie Grey came from. Which is no being renovated and they paid off the whole block where my grandmother lives to knock those house down and build a community center in it's place. And desu it's the best they can do for that block. My grandma got paid a good amount too, some for the house and some to find a new house. And as of now is the only person still living on that block until they give her the go ahead.
>>
>>74212235
too long sry
>>
Anything that is accesible is garbage
>>
>>74212270
finally someone who understands this board
>>
>>74212015
Avoiding opposing viewpoints is great for critical thinking skills!
>>
He's becoming more and more generic, music videos with big booty strippers and expensive cars like every other shitty mainstream rapper. I thought he would supposed to be different.

That new Kdot video going to have Drake in tears.

Thank you cornrow kenny you gon get Drake backinto his Take Care shit. Back into his Marvinsroom shit. Back into that Grammy winning shit.

No way is Drake gon take THAT FUCKING DISS lying down. Fuck. He's got Rihanna looking like she'd say "Drake who?". He's got Riri staring into her own soul and only seeing kendrick's face. He's dangling Riri off buildings, crashing cars and getting eaten by sharks and this bitch is still saying Kendrick's the only guy for me.

Goddamn, he made every Drake x Rihanna collab look like a quick fuck fling. Drake got an entire song with Rihanna called Take Care and this video makes that song look like it should be called "Fuck Drake".

And the clothing. Oh my God, Kdot dressing his ass off in this video. He on that first I park my car then I take yo BITCH shit. and fuck. Drake is now bitchless. Rihanna ain't his no more.

I can't ever see Riri even making another song with Drake after that. I can only imagine the amount of DMs champagnepapi has sent homegirl after seeing this video.

Drake is about to be on some bitter salty shit drunk texting depressed shit again after seeing this video.

These are Drake bars but right now he might as well be singing them about himself because FUCK. RIHANNA AND KENDRICK JUST SHITTED ALL OVER HIM WITH THIS VIDEO. FUCK HE'S DONE.

She walk right up to her ex, look him dead in the face
And say, "You ain't got the juice like that
You ain't got the juice like that"
That's cold, ice cold, girl you ain't have to do him like that
Why you had to do him like that?

Isn't Kendrick married to his high school girlfriend? I don't think Drake even cares about Kendrick's music.

>>
>>74212736
Oh please Drake is the pettiest nigga on earth. This is the same guy that tried to start beef with a tennis player. And he pays very close attention to everyone's moves especially Kendrick and Rihanna. And Kendrick does to him too.

Make no mistake. Kendrick was in full take no prisoners motivation on this album. Called Big Sean a bitch like 60 times on the same song and he purposely got Rihanna to sing a song about Loyalty on his album to get at Drake. There's just no disputing that and this video is the final nail.

This shit is going to piss Drake off a lot and we will finally get depression Drake back. He's been winning too long and now L's are finally going back his way.
>>
>>74212359
Kendrick represents the gentrification of hip hop. The entire genre is dead.
>>
>>74212359
kendrick could announce a sponsorship with KFC tomorrow and his fans would defend it as "improving relations in the black community"
