Do portable music players still have a place in current times, when you can just listen to music from your phone? Is the sound quality better or something? Sorry, I'm just completely green when it comes to that, I've never used one, but headphones port in my phone got damaged and the quality have dropped terribly, so I'm considering buying one.
They're for listening to music if you want to listen to music. Is that hard to understand
people are used to buy these things if they want to go cheaper, you can literally buy some headphones with a sd card reader jor just some couple of dollars
I own a FiiO X1 since my phone does not have expandable memory (capped at 25gb).
They absolutely do have a place in current times.
I use a cheap little Sansa Clip Sport because my phone only has 8GB of space
If you don't want to pay Spotify or Tidal, or want better than 320 kbps quality, or better battery life, they are nice. I don't have one but /g/ likes them. They have a portable music player general where you can ask more about them.

I use a FiiO, it reminds me of the old ipods and it plays FLAC files (so yes the quality can be better). Also, I can fit my entire library on it, unlike my phone which I depend upon for other things with space and power.
I can't stand listing to music with headphones.
i have one of the old ipod classics and a phone. i use both in public and look like a total autist.

I want to get one because I hear they have better DACS. Listening to Spotify on my phone destroys my battery life and my data.
I have an iPod Classic 160 GB
That's only because I have a shitty iPhone 4s with 8GB

Very good for the price, although like quite as pretty and easy to upload as the old ipods. Those things were perfect, except for breaking down and crashing forever after 2 years.

not quite as*
I simply can't afford to pay the extra cash for an Ipod classic that someone stocked away for a while. Apple made a mistake in not having high-capacity music players IMO, but then again they're just tailoring to normies who use Youtube, Pandora, and Spotify instead.

i still have one that works perfectly.
i don't know what i'll do when it will die
