How does a band record a demo cheaply without sounding like total shit?
I have a few mics and an audio interface hooked up to a PC. We want to record a demo to have when we go into the studio. Everything sounds like complete tinny garbage though. Any advice? Also, what's better / more used in the industry, full band recording or doing it track by track?
Use a four track / eight track cassette recorder. You can record each part cleanly and mix them all together. Then just convert it to digital and send it off.
You shouldn't, though. People don't accept demos anymore. You have to build up a fandom / live audience thru local shows first.

We're doing it for ourselves, not a label. We already play a lot of live shows, but we want to go to a studio to record an EP to sell at shows. We figured we should make a demo first to know how we want everything to sound before going in to record.

Sorry, what do you mean by quit the digital? As in don't record a microphone into a DAW?

Is four/eight track hifi or is it similar to standard cassette in sound quality? I'm not OP, but I'm looking for an analog bedroom recording method that I can make tapes and one hifi digital rip with.

you idiot, to get playing local shows you need to send the bar owner/whatever demo tapes so they can hear what you sound like

Too many variables to answer without hearing anything. Learn to mix, and also find a torrent for this Lynda course: https://www.lynda.com/Audio-tutorials/Audio-Recording-Techniques/95612-2.html
