Seriously, why isn't Placebo more known?
They might have had a cheesy image over the years, but the tunes are undeniable.

My personal theory is that they're too American for a British band, and not local enough to be supported by the American scene.
They're actually massive in Europe. UK, France, Germany, etc...
I think it's the opposite: they're too European for yanks.

im from a small eastern yurop country and id say yes, as far as "hipster" bands go, they are pretty popular here
>>74163391
I think it's the gothy fan base. Consumers let social prospects influence what they listen to.
I myself only heard one song called My Sweet Prince which I love and learned to play. Other than that I've only heard thirt cover of Running Up The Hill which I didn't particularly care for. I'll get to their discography at some point but right now I'm into Mozarts piano concertos and Either/Or by Elliott Smith

Haha, well I'm in Canada and I've never met another fan...
I love Placebo. But I hear you, I've never met someone who recognizes their music.

What about the French speaking part?
Placebo's pretty big in France. Brian even sings some songs in French.
>>74163391
They're easily in my top ten bands of all time and I often wonder the same thing. Has to be a regional thing like >>74163432 suggests, they just happen to not be particularly well known over here for whatever reason.
>>74163391
its like Robbie Williams
dude is(was) a massive star in Europe but no one in USA knows about him pretty much
how would you even classify their music? glam pop?
>>74163908
Pop rock. Their earlier material has a more garage band vibe and their later material leans much more heavily on production value and additional instrumentation but it's all just pop rock. The toppest of top-tier pop rock.
>>74163391
Im so happy theres a Placebo thread. Im in minnesota and i love them
>>74163934
Pop rock? Are you serious?
To me pop-rock is stuff like One Direction.
Placebo is so much more than just pop rock dude.
>>74163980
>to me pop-rock is stuff like One Direction
you should listen to more pop rock, then
>>74163980
What >>74163996 said, branch out a bit. Pop rock isn't a dirty word, it just happens to have a lot of shitty music in it. That's not the same as thinking every pop rock band has to be shitty.
>>74163432
their music is more inspired by british pop (depeche mode and bowie) than anything else, and brian is belgian
they're a very european band
>>74164069
>>74163996
I'm sure there's some good pop-rock out there but to me Placebo is more like post-punk revival.
But whatever, trying to ascribe labels to bands always results in disagreements.
>>74163792
>there are yanks that have never heard rudebox or party like a russian
>>74164118
Yeah that's what I meant.
I'm a bong and I know Placebo is big in Europe. I don't think that most Americans would "get" them to be honest.
These guys are Bret Easton Ellis' favorite band lol.
Pretty cool when other artists/writers have their personal favs.
