Let's talk about the gorgeous and talented Canadian musician Claire Boucher aka Grimes.

>ELLE: Do you have any inspiration or production plan for new songs?
>Grimes : A realistic story, since the budget that can be applied to recordings and equipment recently has increased considerably than before (laugh), I'd like to use more synthesizers for music next time. The debut song was also synth centered, but at that time I was still making it without knowing what I was still producing "production". Of course not to mention the budget side, I would like to make a synthesized sound in the form of returning to the beginning by taking advantage of the knowledge I have now.

Who is this 'we'? I'm a post-Art Angels Grimes fan (which is to say, I hadn't discovered her musical until after AA came out.) There is no old vs. new Grimes to me - just Grimes. And I like Grimes.
>>
>>74161426
Grimes' response in that post is one of the worst responses I've ever seen. The fact that she thinks that she needs to tell him that he doesn't like it when it's so painfully obvious only goes to show that she's stupid.

Your response to my post ITT just now is MUCH worse because you point-blank didn't answer my question. Who is this 'we'?

>The fact that she thinks that she needs to tell him that he doesn't like it
She's been talking about ultimately wanting to make mainstream-accessible weird music since practically day-one (this interview is from May of 2011, or more than half a year before Visions came out and made her famous - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMD_6GkBcx8 )
If this Twittterer actually thought this sort of thing was a change for her, then he clearly didn't know all that much about her in the first place.

Different anon. Did it really not occur to you that my name changed or did you just ignore that to make your point?

>ultimately wanting to make mainstream-accessible weird music
That's not what I'm talking about, please re-read my post. What really would've been better would be telling him that instead of the "hurr you just don't like it" argument, which is painfully true, to the point that there's no need to point it out.

>>
>>74166830
Lmao, you still don't understand that 4chan is an anonymous imageboard and not a site with accounts? His "account" wasn't banned, something like that doesn't exist here. If his IP address changes, you have no proof it's the same person posting the image, have you?
>>
>>74166857
>If his IP address changes, you have no proof it's the same person posting the image
Are you dumb? If he posts the same crap again there are big chances it's the same moron. That moron is very persistent and predictible. You don't need to know rock science to detect his shitposting.
>>
>>74162886
>Did it really not occur to you that my name changed
Your 2nd post has no name on it. Hence why tripcodes are fundamentally flawed.

>That's not what I'm talking about
Ask a stupid question, and you might just get called out for it. That's what this PedroRIchardson did, and that's the sort of response he got. He has no one to blame but himself.
>>
>>74167596
>Your 2nd post had no name on it
Exactly why you shouldn't have assumed it was the same person

>He has no one to blame but himself
Please read the greentexted part of your post right above that point
>>
>>74166568
>can't make an argument
>>
>>74166696
I think the new Ricardo would have to be someone who:
1. Is attracted to Grimes (which the guy isn't)
2. Like Grimes' music (which the guy doesn't)
3. Likes to white-knight for her on the Internet (which the guy doesn't)
4. Is obsessed enough with her that he's worried that someone who doesn't like her is going to attack her (which he is not)

In fact, those characteristics seem to fit you, my friend
>>
>>74167880
Lmao! Did you just try to deny the evidence?
>which the guy doesn't
How do you know that unless you're that actual guy? Checkmate.
Also your points 3 and 4 weren't "features" of the real Ricardo. Read again his story.
>>
>>74167880
BTW the real Ricardo wanted to hurt Bjork because this:
>In 1996, López was living alone in an apartment in Hollywood, Florida.[1][2] Around this time, he read an article in Entertainment Weekly that mentioned Björk was in a romantic relationship with fellow musician Goldie.[5] López was disappointed again, eighteen months after his anger at the singer, and noted in his diary, "I wasted eight months and she has a fucking lover".
All Grimes fans know that James is Grimes's boyfriend and I think they have no problem with that. I'm worried about madmans like Jimmy Jimmy and that nazi freak. These people want to hurt her.
>>
>>74167807
Why would you be responding in that person's place without first pointing out that you are a different anon unless you are that same anon? Like I said, poster names/tripcodes are of extremely limited use here since a user can selectively post without it. By your logic I am now the same poster as >>74161137 despite the fact that I am clearly not.

>Please read the greentexted part of your post
Even better, here's your original point:
>>Grimes' response in that post is one of the worst responses I've ever seen. The fact that she thinks that she needs to tell him that he doesn't like it when it's so painfully obvious only goes to show that she's stupid.
Ask a stupid question, and you might just get called out for asking a stupid question. What else would you have expected her to say in response to a question like that? Accept his false premise? What would you have said in her place?

>What else would you have expected her to say in response to a question like that?
Exactly what you said, the fact that "she's been talking about ultimately wanting to make mainstream-accessible weird music". Instead, she made herself look stupid by pointing out something painfully obvious.

>>74167941

Not him but the songs are too repetitive without being interesting (Essentially, I like krautrock because the songs draw me in despite the repetition, Art Angels failed to do so), the addition of actual instruments to the instrumentals are terribly used, one example being the terrible repeated guitar line in SCREAM. SCREAM is especially annoying, I understand it as a break from the very similar-sounding songs in the rest of the album, but it only serves to annoy me, and the screams as the chorus, named as an inaccessible part of the song, are still very poppy. I don't dislike pop music, but this album is just shit, especially as a follow-up to legitimately good albums like Halfaxa and Geidi Primes. (Visions is meh honestly).
>>
>>74177037
Scream has barely 2 minutes 20 seconds. You wrote a wall of text criticizing such a short song and ignored the rest of the album?
>Essentially, I like krautrock because the songs draw me in despite the repetition
If you're bored of a 2 minutes 20 seconds song and can handle a monstruous repetitive song like Halleluhwah (18 fucking minutes of about the same beat), something is wrong with you. Krautrock is far more repetitive and uneventful than her ADHD music.
>I don't dislike pop music, but this album is just shit, especially as a follow-up to legitimately good albums like Halfaxa and Geidi Primes. (Visions is meh honestly).
Funny that you dislike exactly her poppier albums, V & AA, despite your claim. I think you care more about aesthetic than actual songwriting.

Unironic question: Do you think ANY musician's career has ever directly benefited from them being posted about on here? The only possible example I can think of is Lorde. And that's only if the theory that the "some random" mentioned by Grimes as having tipped her off to Lorde's existence and thus enabled her to tweet the link to Lorde's soundcloud that is purportedly what got things to "start moving" with Lorde's career (do a search for "grimes" in this article - https://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/oct/10/lorde-just-freak-royals-pure-heroine ) was actually her lurking on /mu out of curiosity after being sent a link to that "/mu sings oblivion" video.

She gave a flippant response to a stupid question. Perhaps not the best form for discussion irl, but this communication on twitter we're talking about. Heck, judging just by the posts I know to me mine and believe to be yours ITT, are either of us honestly ones to judge others for being flippant on the internet?

My problem is when other people use that image as what they think to be a good response. For example, in one of these threads a while back, I expressed concern that her new album would sound like the Suicide Squad song, since it was her most recent song I believe and I hated it. The response was that exact screenshot. Sure, it's a stupid, flippant response, but when someone treats it like gospel, it bothers me whenever I see that image.

People everywhere (not just on 4chan - professional music journalists the world over are quite possibly even worse with this) actively get off on memeing ANYTHING/EVERYTHING she says to an obnoxious degree.

Why do you think it is she's reduced her social media presence over the past couple of years to pretty much just quirky images and the occasional lip-service to whatever politically-leftist-correct meme cause happens to be popular in the music world at the moment? Because those are the only things she can do or say that won't make her a tabloid news story.

When you are on the internet and Grimes is the topic of discussion there will always be stupid people pushing equally stupid memes. Why? Honestly, it would probably take a research grant in sociology and a published book on the findings to properly explain it. The point is - ignore the memes when they get out of hand, say your piece honestly and truthfully in your own words whenever possible, and you'll be a happier person for it.

What does it actually mean to be a "pop-star"? Because that's what she's talking about here. The disconnect between what normal people like you/me/Grimes think of when that comes to mind and all the entrenched ideas the music industry/music journalism world have about what that means in terms of how musicians operate. Eg - working completely solo while also being a pop-star. Which many people in the music world seem to is outre, despite the fact that a number of the biggest legends in pop music history (e.g. Prince) where famous for doing exactly that.

>‘F— They’ is a song about anything that holds you back from being exactly who you are, so we wanted to make a video that showcases parts of our personalities that have been suppressed. We wanted to make sure it was personal, so we actually wrote the video treatment ourselves. Tucker had a college coach who had a preconception of what a basketball player was supposed to be like and wanted to force him into that box. When Tucker’s personality didn’t fit, he made life miserable for him and took all the joy out of basketball, his lifelong love. That’s why the video starts the way it does :)
>And Sophie stands up — or rather, sits down — in a squat in every scene because that’s exactly how she likes to sit. We were so lucky to find Mac Boucher, who was willing to work on our crazy treatment with us. He enhanced our vision beyond what we could have ever imagined. He is one of our favorite directors; we are huge fans of all the work he does with Grimes and we feel so lucky we got to work with him. The vibe on the set of this music video was incredible. The whole crew felt like a bunch of friends getting overly excited, laughing all weekend. We brought our friend Olivia Perdoch to do the styling and we got to wear clothes by one of our favorite designers and people, Johnson at Libertine. We spent three long, crazy days together in Toronto and were giddy the entire time in part because we were feeling so grateful that we got to work with such talented, kind weirdos. We were all pushing each other to do something a little more outrageous with each take. It really fit the spirit of the song! We also brought our nutty genius of a friend Danny Moon to do some of his signature art and paints throughout the video, and he features in the video — as does the beautiful wolf-dog, Chester. We hope the spirit of joy, inclusivity, and freedom that we felt those couple of days translates into the video!

Actually she says very directly,
>It’s not pop music.
>>
>>74194695
>Are you really and truly calling all of the people who comment on cultural-appropriation idiots?
Different anon.

Unironically yes. "Cultural appropriation" is just a pejorative way of describing cultural growth. Cultures which don't actively grow, die. And cultures which don't actively "appropriate" from others dwindle and die, complaining all the while about others "appropriating" from them. Nothing is new or unusual about this either. Just go ask the ancient Greeks/Romans.
>>
>>74194808
What is 'pop music'? There is no definitive answer because the meaning of the word "pop" depends on YOUR frame of reference. Popularity is relative.
>>
>>74194859
>muh melting pot
That's the thing, there is a difference between, say for example, a Vietnamese person setting up a restaurant, and then people that are not Vietnamese going to said restaurant and paying to enjoy something outside of their culture. Infact, if these same people then went home and attempted to replicate this same food so they could enjoy it privately, this is still fine and sharing culture.
But if a white person goes and eats Vietnamese food, then finds recipes, and sets up their own shop simply to profit, this is cultural appropriation.
There are examples upon examples like this.
Native Americans are still to this day being pushed off land, and random companies take their patterns, do not give credit, and sell said patterns on clothing.
I think we can agree that it's wrong.

And I'm pretty sure there is a hundred things the greeks/romans did that we didn't love. So them doing it doesn't make it suddenly okay.
>>
That's important
>>
>>74194917
>Although pop music is seen as just the singles charts, it is not the sum of all chart music. Pop music is eclectic, and often borrows elements from other styles such as urban, dance, rock, Latin, and country; nonetheless, there are core elements that define pop music. Identifying factors include generally short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), as well as the common use of repeated choruses, melodic tunes, and hooks.
>The main medium of pop music is the song, often between two and a half and three and a half minutes in length, generally marked by a consistent and noticeable rhythmic element, a mainstream style and a simple traditional structure.[17] Common variants include the verse-chorus form and the thirty-two-bar form, with a focus on melodies and catchy hooks, and a chorus that contrasts melodically, rhythmically and harmonically with the verse.[18] The beat and the melodies tend to be simple, with limited harmonic accompaniment.[19] The lyrics of modern pop songs typically focus on simple themes – often love and romantic relationships – although there are notable exceptions.
>>
>>74194950
>sharing culture.
Never mentioned anything about "sharing" culture. I said cultural GROWTH, as in one culture consuming parts of another like food and then turning that raw cultural energy into just another part of itself.

>if these same people then went home and attempted to replicate this same food so they could enjoy it privately,
They are growing their own cultural sphere to include/benefit from its existence.

>if a white person goes and eats Vietnamese food, then finds recipes, and sets up their own shop simply to profit
They are growing their own cultural sphere to include/benefit from its existence.

>I think we can agree that it's wrong.
It's terrible. It's also the ONLY way for a culture to avoid extinction. Grow, or die.

>And I'm pretty sure there is a hundred things the greeks/romans did
>not knowing your ancient history
The ancient Romans invaded Greece, destroyed it's city-states as governing bodies, adopted its citizens as culturally enlightened slaves, and sucked Greek culture dry, to the point where nearly every aspect of Roman culture was just a blatant ripoff of something from the Greeks (eg. including all of their gods.) And guess what? The Roman Empire that arose out of that massive case of cultural appropriation was the single-most powerful civilization the world has ever.

Cultural appropriation is a necessary evil. Just like having to kill plants/animals in order to have food to eat. Unless you don't mind starving.

See https://www.loc.gov/collections/songs-of-america/articles-and-essays/musical-styles/popular-songs-of-the-day/

"Pop music" is not descriptive of any ONE specific song length, structure, or sonic style mold. "Pop music" is a meta-genre term. What it actually translates toin meaning to any particular person is based on that person's physical location, culture, and what time period they are from. Anyone who says otherwise just doesn't know or understand music history.

"popular music" =/= "pop music"

What's the difference?

When people are talking about "pop" music, they're not referring to popular music as a whole.

"Although popular music sometimes is known as "pop music", the two terms are not interchangeable.[7] Popular music is a generic term for a wide variety of genres of music that appeal to the tastes of a large segment of the population,[8] whereas pop music usually refers to a specific musical genre within popular music.[9]"

Grimes is my life, personified. Grimes is the logical progression on the timeline of history straight from Renaissance to modernity. She is the second coming of Lady Mary herself, prophet from the Gods after Jesus and Mohammad. Her music comes from the heavens, righteous flow of pure, undistilled inspiration.

You look at Grimes and you see EVERYTHING you need to see, experience everything you need to experience, appreciate everything you need to appreciate, when it comes to creativity, arts, style, fashion and music. There haven't been anybody like her, there will NEVER be anybody like her. People will be speaking of her for centuries, because she brought everything needed to capture about pop culture, all the GOOD without any of the bad.

There are MILLIONS upon MILLIONS of young girls all over this huge fucking ass planet right now who are copying her every single move, her mannerisms, anime personality, style, music, her attitude. She guides all the lost lambs with her soothing voice and her synths. Female version of David Bowie has arrived and here to stay. Think about it. She does everything herself - cover art, music production, mastering, video directing, concept design, singing, instruments, and even has enough in her left to produce music for other artists out there. She doesn't even do drugs anymore, thus she's not in a haze or sluggish but has overflowing energy that sets her out to be at her peak productivity.

Fuck Katy Perry or all these minor pretentious "gamer gurl" hipster types like Zooey Dechanel except singing, and fuck the Lauren Southerns or what else people bow down to as their muses. Fuck that shit. Only one you need, only one ANYBODY really needs, is the One and Only truly skilled, able and inspired Artist put to this world to take all the styles and attitudes created by modernity, the achievements in pop, rock and rap, to combine them together to be the Ambrosia that the pretentious, fake and gay hipster youth need.

Behold - Grimesy :3

None of that and it doesn't matter anyway. If you're using an idiotic word then you must be at least dumb.

Nice backhanded compliment, dip
>>74202977
Stupid comment. In general she doesn't buy the outfits she wears on her photoshoots. Also she's doing photoshoots from time to time to put food on her table while you're pirating her albums. Her main focus is still music.
>Her music is at best a 6/10

>>74203423
Maybe her music sounds more DIY and less polished, but she's far better in every way.
>>
>>74204298
Nice copypasta but you shot yourself in the nuts with this stupid sentence:
>Only one you need, only one ANYBODY really needs, is the One and Only truly skilled, able and inspired Artist put to this world to take all the styles and attitudes created by modernity, the achievements in pop, rock and rap, to combine them together to be the Ambrosia that the pretentious, fake and gay hipster youth need.

her next albums going to be good. shes like kanye, even if it sucks, its good.
>>
>>74203423
dude fka twigs just whispers into some shit and dances like tenashe, stfu. she doesnt even produce all her music like grimes does.
>>
>>74204829
Unlike FKA Twigs, Tinashe actually did some good music. Aquarius is a good album.

Being a good producer =/= being a good songwriter

She's both a good producer and a good songwriter. You can't deny the songwriting quality of songs like Oblivion, Genesis, Be a Body, Realiti, Flesh Without Blood, Artangels, Rosa, Dream Fortress, to name a few. Checkmate, naysayer.

Grimes barley enunciates words and drowns her terrible voice in reverb and tricks for the entire set

FKA Twigs demonstrates far better vocal abilities with clarity and emotion, grimes car barely emulate a melody from her recordings. She has no ability on the keyboard (hitting black keys exclusively in parts) this shit is basic "i've been playing for 5 minutes" tier laziness.

And most of you plebs think it's great because she's an awkward girl with social problems.
>>
>>74206474
She's great because she's making great music. It doesn't matter if she barely enunciates words and drowns her voice in reverb and tricks; that's an artistic choice. Are you such a huge pleb to prefer only clear vocals, devoid of effects? Stick to Beyonce and FKA Twigs, Grimes is 2 deep 4 u. I bet that MBV's Loveless is alien music to you.
>hitting black keys exclusively in parts
Because the song included black keys playing, dip. Ever heard of pentatonic scales?
>this shit is basic "i've been playing for 5 minutes" tier laziness.
Then why don't you prove her wrong and make better songs than her? Go ahead. Let's see who gives a fuck about your terrible compositions.
>>
>>74206741
>Are you such a huge pleb to prefer only clear vocals, devoid of effects?
No, and that's why FKA twigs is a good discussion point, she uses effects incredibly well on things like Figure 8. Grimes relies on them exclusively to the point that they're fatiguing.
>Because the song included black keys playing, dip. Ever heard of pentatonic scales?
it's a dumbed down version of what she played on the album, do you even music ?
>your terrible compositions.
argumentum ad hominem, weak...
>>
>>74206856
>it's a dumbed down version of what she played on the album, do you even music ?
Do you even improvisations? She improvised that melody.
>No, and that's why FKA twigs is a good discussion point, she uses effects incredibly well on things like Figure 8. Grimes relies on them exclusively to the point that they're fatiguing.
FKA Twigs is all effects and no substance. Grimes is an electronic musician so it's 100% understandable why she added many effects. That's the aesthetic of her music. For her, the voice is yet another instrument. At least she didn't use the vocoder like many other electronic such as Daft Punk and Kraftwerk.
Unfortunately you're too pleb to understand her aesthetic and her music.

I like them both, I don't really care how talented either is if their music sounds nice to me, maybe my taste just isn't delicate enough idk but fuck all this dick swinging contest. We all gon be dead in 100 Years. Let the kids have the music.

When grimes performs with absolutely no effects, let me know, but you've just been proven wrong. No effects, all substance. She's a more entertaining performer than grimes.
>>
>>74207145
Such a boring song. Do you really enjoy that dull crap? Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz That's the complete opposite of Grimes' exciting music.
>When grimes performs with absolutely no effects, let me know
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7rM67NPhZ8
Zero effects, a ton of emotion.
>She's a more entertaining performer than grimes.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Good joke. Grimes mops the floor with her: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4k3593
>>
>>74207217
Gibberish, she can't actually clearly articulate anything. Her finger work is also horrible, she should give up trying to play an instrument like that. It actually hinders her performance.
>>
>>74207217
no stage presence whatsoever, not at FKA twigs level yet.

Bait. That video http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4k3593 is a proof that Grimes is a world class performer able to impress the crowds positively.

>In a year when Glastonbury has paid tribute to David Bowie and Prince, two artists celebrated for being relentlessly creative, individual and fearless, the Canadian singer/songwriter/producer Grimes – real name Claire Boucher – proves that their maverick spirit lives on in a new generation. Grimes might just be the best pop star in the world right now – here’s why.

You literally described 2/3 of Visions and half of AA here

She's a far superior singer, songwriter and producer. Maybe those folks are better instrumentalists but that's like saying a worker (Metheny) is better than an engineer (Grimes). Metheny and Lage could NEVER make something as good as Be a Body but Grimes could make instrumental shit like them and more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhNxvoXOKcI

No. You just expressed your boring opinion.
