If you're getting older, music is indeed getting less important to you, btw.
At least it's true for me and all people I know. It's mostly the 20-something males who are obsessed with music and unable to cherish silence. Once you're getting older you're fine with silence or you go to a concert for some hours and want silence afterwards again. But this almost religious adoration of music seems to be almost exclusively to youngsters. (Excluded are adult composers etc. of course)

I went to a psych ward once where music wasn't allowed because it could trigger mood swings or cravings depending on your problem. Not listening to music for a while can be helpful too. At least for me, I get carried away very easily by music, especially when I'm sad. It only fuels my sadness. I agree with you that music can help you get through hard times though.
