Only patricians think that album is terrible. It's one of Metallica's best releases since they got rid of their shitty angst guitar-wank phase and went for some mature riffs.

the drums sound like wind chimes and the snares sound like garbage can lids, they're pushed to the front so much so that it's actually distracting
lyrically very weak
not as bad as everyone thinks it is
i fucking love the garbage can snare sound desu
I mean, is not like the worst in the history of Metallica but personally I didn't enjoy it
james iha's solo album was pretty terrible
Metallica is funny. I generally prefer it when established bands try to innovate rather than peddle second-rate rehashes of their glory days until they croak (e.g. Slayer), but they manage to make the most misguided and embarrassing stylistic choices imaginable every single time. I keep thinking, they can't sound innovate in a shittier way than the previous time, yet somehow they always do.
How come nobody trashes this snare sound it sounds even more like a trash can

Honestly edgy kid me liked it. I bought it while my family was fleeing hurricane katrina back in 05, still kind of fuck with Some Kind of Monster despite the trash production
