The music industry (wealthy executives) have arbitrarily given commercial traction to a ton of bland and very old forms of music; purely in response to market demands from plebian masses who have not listened to very much music at all and have missed most of the innovations in any given genre.

If you enjoy hip-hop and think it's interesting, then seek out more of it. If you don't want to and are only doing it because it's "gaining traction", well, your choice as well, but I don't think you'll enjoy it as much.
