What does /mu/ say to people when they ask what kind of music you're into?
>>
I tell them. Unfortunately, most people don't know what I'm talking about (Broken-beat), I would love to find people with similar taste to my own.
>>
>>74112824
"uh...a-a lot"
>>
I say I like everything then ask them what they like. Then I make a discussion based on what they like, trying to recommend them albums that will force them to branch out more and find more experimental stuff.

E.G.,
"What do you like anon"
Oh I like a bit of everything... what about you?"
"oh em gee I luv hip hop... schoolboi q, drake, the list goes on"
"Do you like Nas?"
"I've never listened to it"
"Nas is awesome, serious old school man. You should listen to Nas"

Now he'll go listen to a nice jazzy and culturally relevant hip hop album, and I can recommend him more obscure stuff like Death Grips later on or maybe go into jazz, depends on what he likes about the album (I mean, everyone likes Nas)
>>
>>74112901
What is the difference between breakbeat and broken-beat
>>
everything but rap and country
>>
>>74112824
I don't keep up with the top 40 anymore so I just say I like older stuff. That tends to satisfy them
>>
Weird music they wouldn't like.
>>
Post-avant jazzcore.
>>
>>74112824
Usually I have some dumb sarcastic answer, because most people don't really care and the real motive behind their question is more about some social ice-breaker process than factual answers and they can gauge who I am based the approach of my response and if I make a joke they can think oh cool this guy is laidback and self-deprecating and blah blah what a neat person, as opposed giving them some hyper-specific esoteric answer like the majority of the board would do in which case anyone asking would have their autism meter's needle twisting into a corkscrew from bending so hard to the left and duck out of the conversation as quickly as possible (hey I'm gonna run and grab a drink, talk to you in a bit)
>>
>>74112824
im into finnish progressive dreamfunk
>>
>>74112824
"Anything groovy", then list a few artists they'd know like Jamiroquai or Donna Summer.
>>
>>74112935
Break-beat sounds like 90's rave,
https://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PL4241DAA4C5F6A7EE&params=OAFIAVgB&v=xoa8yCI5uE8&mode=NORMAL

While Broken-beat has a strong Jazz and Funk influence.

probably the best response if you don't even list any artists
>>
>>74112824
>"Oh man I listen to all sorts of stuff! I love music, what kind of stuff do you listen to?"

>"oh do you like (artists in specific genre they mention that they probably like)"

or for normies

>"oh yeah they're alright, anyway moving on because i can see you don't want to talk about music...."

it's not that fucking hard you spergs

I really like this anon. Do you have a list of good releases?

>>74112824
I like some of everything, and if they name a genre of music they like, I'll tell them my favorites from it.
>>
I tell people I listen to "elitist hipster bullshit"
>>
>>74112824
"I like anything so long as it's got passion".

Now that I'm reading that sentence I realise I need a new answer.

oh a bit of everything

Good answer, it signals that you care about music while still being humorous and self deprecating.

Basically, get anything touched by Dego/Kaidi/Bugz in the attic crew. Those are the kings, but there are others like Ajazz, Jazzanova, Jazztronik, Jeremy Ellis, Lanu, etc.

Here's a track from his latest EP. Fire.

Just start off by saying "well lately I've been listening to this one band(ex: mbv) and then just started listening to said genre and how you love it( shoegaze). Gets you to open up and not really sound like a douche

lots of stuff, rock mostly
>>
I usually say, I like music with a "woah" factor or really memorable moments. Those come from so many different genres and styles. I've been getting into modern pop; I think it's really underrated and unfairly written off. It's disrespectful to the producers, songwriters and engineers who bust their ass to work on the music, but that's just my opinion.

anyways, what about you?

I do this:
I ask them what they answer first.
If they say "I listen to everything..." or something like that, I change the subject

>"change the subject?"
Yes, I change the subject because according to people here saying something like "I have been listening to math rock recently what math rock bands are you into", will make the other person feel bad and so this is a bad thing to do.

The thing is you can't know what he likes from what he said "I listen to everything", so you CAN'T know is what you will say (basically the genre you will use instead of math rock) is something he knows and so wont make he fell bad
>>
>>74112824
>g-grunge and uhmm nu-metal
>>
>>74115344
Firstly, just don't ask them what bands of the genre they like if you don't know for sure that they've heard of the genre or not. Also, understand that someone saying "I listen to everything" doesn't necessarily mean they think that they've heard every specific subgenre, so they're not necessarily going to feel bad if you mention a subgenre they haven't heard of. Secondly, do your best to guess if they've heard of the genre or not, and if you think they probably wouldn't have heard of it, then phrase your statement like "I've been listening a lot to a genre called ___ lately" but if you think there's a good chance they have heard of the genre, say "I've been listening a lot to ___ lately." Either way, it's really not a big deal if you guess wrong and use the opposite phrasing, I don't think it'll make them feel bad, but it's just those are the most natural ways of phrasing the statement in my opinion.
>>
>>74112824
"been pretty into techno lately, mostly minimal stuff like villalobos and ame"

i think ive said that word for word three times in the last week
>>
>>74112824
"I listen to whatever, but recently I've been listening to X genres or X bands"
>>
>>74115617
>someone saying "I listen to everything" doesn't necessarily mean they think that they've heard every specific subgenre,

if the answer was literal YES it would mean that

but as I said here
>"s you can't know what he likes from what he said "I listen to everything""
its not literal
>>
>>74115753
>if the answer was literal YES it would mean that
No, it would not. If someone says that they "listen to everything", they might mean that they listen to rock, they listen to metal, to country, rap, pop, electronic, etc. but there could just be a few classic rock artists they've heard and so they figure that makes it okay for them to say they "listen to rock," and maybe they've heard a few thrash metal bands and so they figure they can say they "listen to metal," and they've listened to dubstep, so they figure they can say they "listen to electronic," etc. So they figure they can say they "listen to everything," because they've heard a bit from every genre that, in their minds, exists. Of course, most people haven't actually listened to a bit of each genre that exists, but there are people who think that they have, and those are the people who are most likely to tell you "I listen to a bit of everything." But even those people don't necessarily mean that they do know of every subgenre that exists within the main genres they listen to.
>you can't know what he likes
You could if you just asked them what specific artists they like.
>>
>>74113665
People usually stop listening at goth rock or black metal, depends what you list first.
