Surely you don't think it's a good idea to have all your high-precision audio circuitry in a box with a bunch of random high-frequency EM and RF noise sources?
External interfaces are the way to go. I haven't tried those Blue USB mics but maybe there's something to be said for them, given a clean power supply through a USB hub.

>>74100106
>expensive computers are not a necessity in music production
True, depending on what you're doing. A system that doesn't drop out during a take is pretty important.
>headphones/speakers are the most important physical investment
Headphones definitely, if you don't treat your room.
>other items can be useful but not a necessity (unless you're a pro)
A cheap keyboard controller is a must imo. I got tired of carving patterns in trackers very quickly.

I've hit rock bottom lads. My studio's packed up and all my equipment in storage, my laptop is broken in a literal half and my phones speaker is fucked so I can barely even use caustic. I gotta go to a mate's house just to play the keys or bass these days, shit's all fucked.

I'm thinking about buying some type of standalone hardware to keep me busy even though I have more pressing matters like getting a car or finding a place to live. I've become increasingly obsessed with the OP-1 even though I know it's nothing worth the asking price but the work flow seems ideal to me. Any thoughts? We really need to do something to vamp the threads up

I'd really like to start something like a shared drive or collaboration of projects to where we share stuff we made.

So someone wanting to get into mixing could download the files and plugins and see how it was done in say reaper or something.

Thus, theyd get the reaper project file and the instrument tracks. Might be cool or a total disaster.

I don't know if you guys appreciate this type of question, but recently got a presonus audiobox usb after my focusrite broke, and the box works fine on my mac, but I'm pretty dumbfounded that windows asio drivers apparently only allow one program to access the audio interface at a time. I use it often for practicing guitar along with music on the web, or at least on the mac i do, but on windows this is apparently impossible without buying some workaround program like asio link.

Is this something producers on windows just learn to put up with, or is there a better way I don't know about? I just find it hard to believe it's 2017 and you can't have more than one audio source running at a time, that's just bizarre. I mean i can see this being a major annoyance while trying to audition stuff for sampling and whatnot in other programs and stuff like that as well, so just don't see how it's acceptable.
>>
>>74102712
I'm on windows with asio and I have no idea what the fuck you're complaining about- you've got something set up wrong.

(Also I can't see any of those situations being a problem for somebody who knows what they're doing but that's beside the point)
>>
>>74102712
i use windows and i can do this in cubase there is an option to release when application is in background
>>
>>74102865
https://help.ableton.com/hc/en-us/articles/209770485-No-audio-when-using-ASIO-driver-Win-

>Most ASIO drivers allow only one application at a time to access a soundcard.

From this and other sources this seems pretty standard for asio, so not sure how you're just getting around it.

>>74102871
I'm just trying to use guitar rig, which doesn't have that option, and when I set it to not allow apps to have exclusive access to it in the interfaces device properties it just doesn't let guitar rig use it at all.
>>
>>74102871

Yeah Cubase and Wavelab allow this if you disable "Play In Background".

>>74102712
Steinberg (the developers of the ASIO protocol) released a multi-client solution for people who want to use ASIO with more than one application simultaneously - since all apps would be routed through ASIO you might still not be able to use any applications that can only use the standard Windows audio subsystem, like most web browsers:

https://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=48

>>74103031
>From this and other sources this seems pretty standard for asio

It is, from Steinberg:

>the basic idea behind ASIO is
that professional audio applications entirely take ownership of the ASIO device. Only very few ASIO drivers support true multiple application access.
>>
>>74103031
i have ableton also and can listen to youtube while i use it i have no idea what to do about your problem on my computer i have gone into bios and disabled onboard audio and disabled audio for windows sounds everyting goes through the interface
>>
>>74103083

Disabling your built-in audio doesn't mean that your external interface will use ASIO by default, it would still use the Windows audio subsystem unless told otherwise - do you have ASIO enabled in Ableton?

ASIO4All might also allow this use though, but most dedicated ASIO drivers don't.
>>
>>74103066
Is there some rationale for this? I just find it a bit absurd that you can't just practice guitar with guitar rig, at least not with music on the same pc. Guess I'm looking for some kind of workaround.
>>
>>74103239

The rationale is pretty simple - it was initially designed as a Windows low-latency solution for people who worked with audio in a professional capacity and (at that time) the assumption was that this would entail a single application or tool being used at any one time. It was also initially only used by Steinberg applications, which you could seamlessly switch between if needed by releasing the driver in the background.

Apple was ahead of the game in that respect since they not only had low-latency audio built into OS X but it also was multi-client from the get-go.
>>
>>74103352

I need to add here that single-client use is what reduced latency to the extent that it did with ASIO - each layer that you add to the driver model (like a mixer that allows more than one application to use the protocol at a time) would add latency.

The multi-client application I posted above will add latency for this reason, since it is a wrapper or a proxy that "hosts" ASIO and allows the applications to connect to it instead.

So,
I'd like to start actually producing techno music (like acid techno, maybe some dub)

the thing is, I can't find any resource/tutorial

I'd like to use only ableton lite which is what I own. I already have many samples and vsti and addons, but if I search anything related to music production I only find some dudes on youtube that picks up pre-made samples and stick them up and then boom it's a song

I mean, no shit

Is it a worthwhile exercise to practice "deep" listening to music which influences you? Like sitting down and really trying to focus on picking out the different instruments, chord progressions, mastering and such. I'm interested mostly in electronic genres so I feel like it could definitely help a lot.
>>
so I played this at a party yesterday and idk if its my mixing or the speakers but the mixing sounded like COMPLETE ASS. I eq'd some bass out and added a bit of highs, can someone tell me if its ok now?

>>74109118
No, seriously studying music that inspires/influences you and figuring out what makes it work will not help you improve at all.
>>
>>74109121
EQ the kick to be much louder on the low end. Sidechain it to some instruments, and add a top kick to it. Also compress the master a lot more, way too quiet, lot's of room in the mix.

Just pirate different DAWs and see how you feel about it. I personally prefer DAW's like Renoise and Ableton because the UI is nice for workflow, shows everything on one screen with one click. Whereas FL studio is window hell and takes longer than it should to get where you want.

Really DAW's are all basically the same, just different workflow features.

Some tips on mixing would be appreciated. Is the drum beat loud enough?

How the fuck do I add points to a fl studio graph (e.g. automation) without changing the value / place it on the line
>>
>>74110803
nice start. None of the drums are cutting through the mix, try sidechaining and more compression, probably not the best choice of snare. Also, sidechain ur kick to the 808. the sampled vocal lead thing is good. keep going dude.

>>74108326
hahaha, this is actually kinda cool

>>74109118
yes

>>74107875
pretty good for a first track, wasn't that exciting though. nice
can i please get some feedback

does anyone know how i might be able to get this kind of sound?

ive been trying different synths and tweaking with filters and such all day but nothing really sounds quite right

lfo to fequecy filter a little decay and attack to make that wave effect increase low and reduc high
>>

tho wtf this vid lol

this helped with the backup synths but i still cant get that lead, im using mosak atm u know any synth choices that could help?
>>74111933
its art man dont h8
>>
>>74112061

The lead actually sounds like a vocoded human voice every now and again, so it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be a voice sample that's been used originally.
>>
>>74112061
i use ni massive , the lead sounds like a guitar with a little filter effect, the other1 seems like a violin , put many voices a little attack and reduc the intensity
>>
>>74112279
tho i think the lead can be created without a guitar

someone on a previous thread suggested to double it, i did it

How do i take a chord progression and make it interesting? I have a repeating 2/5/1 in c right now and im trying to mix it up so it doesnt just play the same pattern over and over

>>74113590
mix up your voicing, make them more dense or more sparse, perhaps change the rhythm a bit, make certain instruments more or less prominent
>>
>>74113601

>>
>>74113590
rhythm, the actual timbre/patch, arrangement of instruments....

this question gets asked all the time and every time i don't think anybody realizes how fucking broad that is, one progression can be literally a million different songs. a shitty couple chords can be a good song still

bretty gud m80, a bit crowded in the middle with all the crashes but I actually like it a lot on the whole

>>74107875
maybe I got burnt out by a roomm8 who played DJ Shadow on loop all day and night but I deduct points for B4s, can't help it. I like how you just tail thrugh the first beats of the next round later in, though. lay something sweet and crisp over this to fill out the top end, maybe don't even compress it

>>74117245
kegels
the drums sound actually loose to me. maybe try scooting beats back and forth until they sound tighter.
also maybe start your filter and/or amp attacks a little higher and/or faster, e.g. on the lead

>>74108225
just detune a few cents and fiddle with pan and EQ and you couldn't NOT hear it lel

Hey I dig this one! (:
>>
>>74120464
Got a lot of work to do there.
Kick is barely audible. Hats are too loud. There's no humanization so it sounds very robotic. Drums in general need a lot of work. I'd start from there and then also learn about mixing.
>>
>>74120629
Thanks for the feedback man. The only speakers and headphones i got are the basic monitor speakers that came with the computer back in 2008 and apple earbuds. Im trying not to make that an excuse however. I tried to have those almost ambient soft pads and synths to contrast with the very dry and hard drums, also I guess play around with structure i guess? But mixing is a process that i need to study on. A good mix saves a alot of shit, right?

You won't have money left for dude weed when you get the sort of equipment that lets you hear what you need to hear for a good mastering job.

>>74120629
damn, does everyone's drums need work?

>>74120986
kek, well, your riffs are fine. now put the old drums back but square the beats up, and I think you'll find the whole thing sounds a lot tighter.
>>
>>74121085

this? or do the drums need to be expanded even more
>>
>>74120859
twisted and bizarre. nice selection of samples. I could see myself listening to this more than twice.

>>74121092
you might get away with listening to lots of music that's mixed/mastered how you like it through those phones in order to train your ears as to what good sound sounds like. I'm told M50s are heavy on the bass though, so apply corrective EQ or listen on other equipment a lot. but I haven't been able to get a great mix on cans alone.

>>74121231
on second thought, let's put some swing back in there, just tighter. your synth parts are right where they need to be as far as timing goes.

not gonna comment on the general sound of it, seems like you know what you want out of your style.

the vocals need more body/low-end imo, they sound weak. the snare(?) sounds kinda muted as well, too much low-pass or something. overall the whole track sounds like it needs some panning, reverb and spacing out, etc.

pretty good anon, i like pretty much everything but the drums need work. they lack that signature d&b sound if ya know what i mean. i'd start with the snare, it's nowhere near punchy enough for this track.
also the vocals are overpowering the rest of the mix imo.
>>
>>74122309
im gonna take that as a compliment
thanks so much for the assistance with the drums i fuckin suck at drums <3

>>74108331
the beat is pretty sick, but your flow is horseshit my dude. work on your enunciation and rhythm.
