I think one factor in this case is that the reason a lot of people didn't like Linkin Park's music is that it's emotional to the point of being corny. Chester killing himself made some people who didn't/don't like Linkin Park think a bit about the real pain that inspired those songs and feel bad criticizing them, as it now feels one step closer to criticizing a guy who had to deal with some awful shit for having emotions about it.

It's true that regardless of the artist some people will start praising them after they die even if they had shit on them before, but I think these particular circumstances (along with the fact that Linkin Park's music still has some nostalgia value for many people who would criticize them today) are causing a lot of people to look at Linkin Park as more than a punchline edgy teen band.
