Don't give up, get a 4-string tenor banjo, the strings have a bit more spacing so it's easier to do rolls.

idk im used to playing guitar with my finger at pretty quick speeds, using my ring finger, transitioning to a narrower neck with looser strings is annoying because i can't play speeds i know i can play

What you want to do is develop a simple picking pattern that you can repeat (pic related) and practice it at slow speeds, until you can play it fine at a slow speed without screwing up, then you just gradually increase the speed by small amounts until you can play it fast. That's what I did when I first taught myself banjo.

Also in the pic you play the bottom notes (on the bass clef) with your thumb and the two notes in between them (on the treble clef) with your middle and index finger (in that order). I would recommend starting at 90bpm and working your way up from there.

I never decided to bother with banjo because of the finger picks, they seemed to make it difficult to play compared to playing just using your fingers instead. I bet as with any instrument you have to go with what people are saying. Choose an easy pattern for your right hand and learn it. Played guit and other stringed instruments so left hand was easy. Found that you used mostly your right hand. It's all about the right hand it seemed and the picks were a PITA.

Also make sure to pick a song you like that is easy and is something to work towards to play, so after practicing a bit you have something to show yourself for it. I bet left hand you just have to learn a few set of chords and their inversions and those are mainly used. CAGED but for Banjo, something probably like that. The beginning is the most difficult time because it is so challenging, but then you start to learn more and can do more and it becomes fun real quick.
