So this album is being hailed as the musical masterpiece of the century by pretty much every publisher and magazine out there, but I just don't get it. How is this album better than your typical rap album? Honestly, I don't even get the appeal of rap in general. I mean, what artistic values am I supposed to be searching for in this genre? No this isn't bait. I feel like I'm missing out on something grand, help me out here.

No it isn't, it isn't even the most highly acclaimed album in his discography
It's got a wide variety of flows on it. Like, a very wide variety of flows. This means a versatile, more varied approach to the kind of rhythmic interplay that hip hop is known for on a track to track basis. While it's backing arrangement on this record isn't as melodically or structurally complex as his previous two records, there's still a lot of behind the scenes sophisticated production work happening on it.

this is why Kendrick himself considers this his best work. although i disagree

Start with Good Kid maad city then To Pimp a butterfly then untitled. And if you still don't like, no big deal. Plenty of music in the world to explore that isn't hip hop.
his lyrical content is amazing. his assonance and consonance is great. his use of storytelling is fantastic. the beats bang. the mastering/mixing is top notch. the concept flows quite well.

I hate that calling a song or album "a total banger" has become an acceptable means of defending it.
Fucking hypebeast children.
